Giant Eagle On Bunts To Become A Good Cents Discount Store?

Post by Bill Call »

It seems a possibility:

How many dollar stores does Detroit Avenue need?

If it does happen all is not lost. Lakewood residents looking for items not offered at the local dollar store can do their shopping in Avon while they are in Avon seeing their doctor.

so based on a story that mentions that Giant Eagle has a low-budget subsidiary operation, you're floating the idea that they're going to convert the Lakewood one into these?

Wow. You do amaze me.

Guess what ... they also have a really high-end version, the Market District. Based on your model of the previous post, I can state without reservation that conversion of the Lakewood Giant Eagle into one of those is also plausible.

Though I know that you believe Lakewood is turning low-budget ... and you might be right. But you know, there's an awful lot of us in the city who don't believe that way. Sorry, I don't live in fear like you do. But I also know that we can't turn the clock back. Lakewood isn't going to be what it was ... but those of us here today can make it remain a residence of choice, regardless of dollar stores ... oh yeah, I also hope you notice that there's a lot of those dollar stores cropping up in the outer ring suburbs too ... they're not just targeting poor old Lakewood ...there's even a dollar store in tony Rocky River! in Westlake!!! A Goodwill store in Avon! Heavens!!!

Reading the article, it seems the Good Cents stores are still grocery stores, not "dollar" stores. And, Bill, I'll bet you lunch that Bunts Road does not become one of them.
And, Bill, you indicated previously that you were going to post the highlights of your RAGBRAI experiences. So........

I want a Pontiac dealership somewhere on Detroit Ave.

Then, after that has proved a success we need a Mercury dealership.

And, a kiosk selling Blackberrys.

Rhetorical excess? Just a preemptive strike!

I suppose the most likely scenario is that they make a few modest changes.

Lakewood has two Drug Marts, one Marc's, numerous dollar stores and a new GFS on 117th. There is a lot of competition for the discount dollar. I think it would be bad strategy for Giant Eagle to try and compete with that market. I've sent them some emails stating my opinion and an email or two to Lakewood's development director on the subject.

A few years ago a Lakewood resident told me that she "shops West, never East". I support policies that encourage Lakewood and Rocky River and Cleveland residents to shop East and not West.

If Giant Eagle chooses to convert the Lakewood Giant Eagle to a Good Cents store maybe there is room for a taxpayer subsidized Fresh Market or Whole Foods at the corner of W 117th and Clifton or maybe a taxpayer subsidized Heinen's.

The County is subsidizing the new Heinens in the Ameritrust building why not one West 117th?

Bill, you seem to be confusing general merchandise stores with grocery stores. Giant Eagle competes with Heinens, not Discount Drug Mart. They also compete with some departments of Marc's, with Aldi's, and with Cleveland's, not Lakewood's, new GFS. My bet is that Giant Eagle, on Bunts road, will survive.
As for your friend, I totally agree. It has been years since I grocery shopped in, for example, Mayfield Heights.

Detroit Avenue is a road so I am going to assume it needs nothing other than some basic pot hole maintenance every now and then.

It may be better to ask,"How many other Lakewoodites want Dollar Stores in the city?" or "What are the affects of low income stores in the city?"

That would be a great question, since I can only assume business are setting up here due to forecast of expected demand in the area? Otherwise they usually don't last that long.

Onomatopoeia? No that's like woof, woof or oink, oink.

Personification? Like "The stars danced across the sky." Not stars like Justin Beeber but the twinkle, twinkle things up in the sky. That doesn't seem quite right either.

How about anthropomorphize? That's a mouthful. Giving human attributes to inanimate objects? That seems right.

Something like "Ask not what your country can do for you..." Can a country ask? Or maybe "What this country needs is a good 5 cent cigar." Wow can you imagine a politician saying something like that today?

I can hear the discussion now. It probably starts and ends with "You must hate the children!!!"
