Mark - Maybe so. BUT .... how does the neighbor know if Bret (from the OP) is packing or not, and maybe having a few adult beverages, and maybe having a bad day.

Personally, I prefer that the members of professional safety forces we employ do the (very good) work they are paid to do. I say "no, thanks" to vigilante justice!

You know, looking at the law, why can't these things be written clearer?

How about no fires on porches? The other day I counted 17 grills on front porches while
walking the dog in the neighborhood. Now I live in an area with lots of doubles, but they
were on doubles singles and apartments.

As for the smoke, decades ago I drove cab, and one of the things I used to explain to vistors
when asked was that Cleveland/Cuyahoga County is a relatively safe area. The chances of you being
involved in a violent crime is almost 0%. Crime in this city is stealing cars. To get hurt, it
has to be because of your smoke going over a neighbors fence. You parked too near their
yard, your radio is too loud, or...

I am not as worried about the person with the CCW permit as the one without.

If you're so scared of a violent reaction from your neighbor, then I would suggest that you never put the effort into getting to know them in the first place. And if that's the case, move. Because a city like Lakewood isn't for you.

Once again, I will put it plainly. I moved to Lakewood BECAUSE the houses were so close. I want neighbors that talk to each other, know each other, and feel comfortable with each other.

I want my neighborhood to be more Neighbor than Hood.

That's not to say that there aren't situations where the police should get involved, but judging by the look on the face of the officer that showed up that night, I'm guessing the cops would love it if people actually TRIED to resolve their differences first before calling 911.

A good platform for running for city council would be erasing this law.

The city ordinance follows state code and EPA regulations that are in place because cuyahoga county is a non attainment area for clean air standards. The ordinance was implemented because of the large numbers of complaints about smoke.
The grills on porches is already addressed in the property maintenance code.
