Just my opinion and realize it is contrary to others. If I recall, this was QSL's first foray into an urban area. The other QSLs are either in suburban areas or airports/arenas that don't have bike night.

I know bike night is a huge success for them and understand why they want one in Lakewood. As mentioned above, though, I'm glad we don't live right near QSL.

Hi Matt Lee,

I'm with you and I don't think it makes me a "naysayer." I think of myself as pro-Lakewood, and when what I know as "Lakewood" is under assault in my opinion I'm voicing my love for a city that is under siege.

Where are the motorcycles supposed to go? Behind QSL? That area is very small. Are they going to take over the whole parking lot? Are we not allowed to go to Drug Mart during that time? What about, and here maybe you can hear my heavy sigh, people who might want to use Kauffman Park? You know for baseball. Or breathing.

This isn't about Harleys Melissa, or anyone's love for them. The space is SMALL. We aren't some sprawling outlying suburb. We are a small city. There's this group working on a "Main Street" plan. The signage, the lamps, the brick. A real Downtown. And we're going to fill it full of loud motorcycles and fumes?

I don't get it. Is there a secret plan to make Lakewood a place no-one wants to live? If they don't live far away from the center?

No Peter it's not walkable. The blasting music, the grease saturating the air. And now motorcycles? I hope that's not the same night as the Library porch concerts.

Monday nights will be a good time to leave Lakewood and check out what's going on to the east (W. 65th, Tremont, Downtown (Cleveland), Collinwood!) or the west of us. Public beaches in Rocky River and Bay. Cool little restaurants and cafes further down the road where they aren't BLATANTLY SELLING OUT THE EXPERIENCE of living in a small, peaceful, walkable community. I let my kid walk to the library on Monday nights for a class he has there. With the hordes of strangers descending on motorcycles, I won't do that anymore.

No, young teenager, one of the best things about living in Lakewood, that it's safe, safe to walk, locals (librarians, storekeepers, fellow parents and residents) looking out for you, not on Monday nights.

Wow.

Really? Is it really the plan to force all of us out? Clear out the center so it can become Crocker Park? Only with dollar stores, drug stores, and greasy chain burger places, not really even Crocker Park huh?

Should Tina move Lion and Blue to Rocky River? How about the Root? How about a little smoke and grease all over your body as you try to make your way to the Root? Maybe you'll just skip it and go to Cravings on Lake Rd. Peaceful. They don't have the same quality of coffee or food but you'll be able to read your newspaper.

QSL had originally said they wouldn't have bike nights here. This was a "different model."

Who is looking out for us? Tom Bullock? He's the councilman for the QSL zone.

Is the mayor thrilled about this? You know he isn't.

Betsy,

How do you know this?

I have heard a lot said about the Mayor.

A “motorcycle hater” has never been a term used to describe Mike … as far as I know.

I believe that the Mayor has spent virtually his entire life residing in Lakewood.

I also believe that Mike may have even lived on Arthur Avenue at one point.

Let’s give the Mayor a break on this one.

Finally … here is something that we can both agree on!

And kudos to City Hall for letting “Bike Night” come to Lakewood.

In speaking with some folks at QS&L when it first opened, City Hall was “allegedly” putting the squeeze on QS&L to not “encourage” or “publicize” bike nights.

And all the money being spent on new lights on Arthur Avenue now makes more sense.

Bikers will have a “well-lit” path on their way home from QS&L Bike Night!

I now have a reason to go to QS&L on Monday nights.

Thanks, QS&L!

You hit on some interesting topics in this response.

The first is you cannot invite and have ribbon cuttings for place like Quaker Steak and
Lube and then ask them to go against what they do. Would you ask World of Beers to stop
selling beer? Would you ask Melt to sell healthy food? How about asking First Federal
to stop making home loans?

This is exactly the slippery slope many of us have spoken about since day one of this
project. It is also one of the reasons many have decided to not come here and help us
understand their point that Commercial Development is a plus for the residents of
Lakewood.

Right now, City Hall is about to go to war against the residents again in an effort to save
$40,000 by spending about $570,000 on new trash cans. While I will be taking this up in
another thread, I would ask City Hall, The Chamber of Commerce, and others, When do we
get the big bonus we were promised? The promise that as we gave our tax dollars to
business districts, and we allowed them to change Lakewood from the "Best Suburb in the
County" aka a wonderful bedroom community that was the best place to raise a family into
a mall-like city that rivals Pearl Road in ambiance? When do the tax payers and voters of
this community get the rewards of the promises made, that the additional taxes would
help offset the residents' cost of living here? I mean Arthur Ave. gets to pay for lights, new
garbage cans, and get more loud traffic? Absurd?

At the same time I know first hand what Quaker Steak and Lube is going through. They
were doing OK last summer with the addition of the front patio. Not great, but near
projections. When the bad weather came and the patio closed, they were losing money.
Money that can only be made up by doing what has succeeded in other locations.

I hope no one says, "Who could see this happening?" Because for a decade we have put
out in various forms, Bedroom Community or Mall Community? They do not exist together.
To try to do both borders on suicide for a community. Do we invest in our houses, and residential
neighborhoods, or do we pump hundreds of millions into propping up a business district
that at best seems unsustainable by comments from 5 Guys, 56 West, and Quaker Steak
and Lube?

We should all sit and think, and ask, Is City Hall here for the residents and to provide us
with the services we have always had? Or, do they at the whim of a few, continue to
balance their books on the backs of the residents while closing our parks so that QSL and
other bars have access to our public park's parking lots? How much do we pay to make their unfulfillable dreams for business come true?

I look forward to QSL Bike Night, but with a tear in my eye for the neighborhoods left behind.

Shame on you, Peter!

I guess you have fallen victim to politics in the ‘Wood.

Mike was appointed and then elected to be the Mayor.

I have a right to disagree with Mike.

Having said that, the Mayor has an open invitation to jump on his motorcycle and join me Monday nights at QS&L.

If Mike doesn’t have a motorcycle, I’ll even let him ride one of mine.

I'll invite you over this weekend for a chill pill party! (I'll even provide a bunch of grains of salt)

Happy Motoring!

Just wondering ... would I be ridiculed and laughed at if I showed up at QSL on a Monday evening on one of these? (because I'm seriously considering getting one)

Peter,

Oh.

You and Gary Rice always confuse me with those emoticons.

I’ll see you this Sunday at your place.

Hold the salt.

New York City’s own “Billionaire Mayor” is banning salt … so … I suspect the ‘Wood is next.

There are plenty of "cool scooters" at QS&L Bike Nights!

You can even buy LOKOL at http://www.clevelandscooters.com/.

But, let's talk about it on Sunday because I have a good lead on your new ride.

I would strongly encourage folks planning on attending QS&L Bike Nights in the ‘Wood on Monday nights to take a motorcycle rider safety course.

There are many offered but, unfortunately, classes fill fast.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety has the following link for those interested in registering for classes: https://ext.dps.state.oh.us/motorcycleOhio/.

Ride safely!

After spending a bit of time today researching the potential conflict of scheduling between the Masonic Lodge and the QSAL bike night, I now truly believe now that there will be no conflicts at all between potential events. Timings are more or less synchronized for one event and the another, plus there are some very good customer relationships involved there too.

On the issue of bikes generally, I've always liked some kind of two-wheeler, being the originator in the 1960's of the Lakewood Day Bicycle Races, and then later, being a Lakewood owner of several mopeds, INCLUDING a duplicate of the one that QSAL has hanging up! :D

I loved the things, and have already told the manager that when that one comes down, we'll be doing some serious negotiating. :D

Mopeds and electric bikes have their place too in the grand scheme of city travel, particularly these days.

Back to the banjo. :D

Have we just started that whole "cool" conversation again!?!?!?

I don't want to be cool. Cool wants to be me!

(Where is Mike Gill when we need him? Probably out there listening to some "good" music.)
