Creating Safe and Affordable Organic Lawns, Landscapes and Playing fields a free how to training session on making the switch to organic turf Presented By: Beyond Pesticides Ohio
Thursday April 11th, 2013, 7pm-9pm
@ Rocky River Memorial Hall: Community Room
21016 Hilliard Blvd.
Rocky River, Ohio 44116
What: A free, comprehensive three-hour training session on how to implement an organic turf program. Training will be introduced by Beyond Pesticides Ohio staff and led by natural turf expert Alec McLennan, President of Good Nature Organic Lawn Care. Topics Include proper soil testing, organic fertilizing, natural weed and disease control, aerating, over seeding, proper mowing, watering, special needs for playing fields and how going organic can save money.
Why: Your organization can protect people's health and the environment and also save money by transitioning to organic turf practices. Cleveland Heights and Cuyahoga County have already banned Lawn Pesticides from all city and county-owned property. University Circle's Wade Oval also recently went organic. In 2011, Connecticut and New York State banned lawn pesticides on all school grounds and playing fields. The reasons are clear: pesticide exposure is dangerous to people and the ecosystem. Many commonly used pesticides have been associated with elevated risks for acquiring asthma, childhood leukemia, learning disabilities and Parkinson's disease.

Re: City Hall & BPO Invite You to RR for Organic Training
It's pretty simple: the two biggest limiting factors in a decent lawn are water and compaction. If you are not willing to water your lawn regularly all summer, and don't relieve compaction by aerating once a year, you're going to be disappointed with the result of any lawn care regimen, organic or otherwise. I've chosen the Darwinian approach myself .... survival of the fittest, as long as it's green ...
