Lakewoodites, Animal Baby Watch! Watch for updates!

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

From the Emerald Canyon (it is not a valley!)

Image
The Bald Eagles have a nest with eggs.

Time to trade spaces

Off the other goes.

Meanwhile the baby owls are getting big!

Image
Eyes already very developed.

Image
Nearly as big as mom!

Image
That is something to dance about!

Stay tuned images updated daily. The LO has other Lakewood photographers and
videographers watching the nest for you. Check back often!

While standing in Lakewood very quietly with some other Lakewood photographers...

Image
Turkey leaving their nest and start collecting in the trees at dusk. By the time we left we
had counted over 30 turkeys, gobbling and showing off plumage!

Image
A raccoon mom, protects her "nest."

Image
A pair of deer wander by.

All of these shots were taken in near darkness with 6400 asa speed.

What next ... a local cable access program called "Wild Lakewood" hosted by Ranger Jim (or as I like to call him: Marlin Perkins, Jr.)?

Thanks for the updates!

A Prayer for Animals
(attributed to Albert Schweitzer)

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated;
for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.
"So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?"

Baby owls getting bigger, this was last night at 7pm.

What was amazing is for a brief moment a bald eagle flew up the river. I made a call to a friend
and the mother was still on the nest, and a male eagle's body was found and recovered. So it
is still believed it was the male from the nest.

Some of you may remember Donna from last year. She nested at my house with husband Bill,
they too mate for life. Last year they raised two chicks Fred and Ed. This year who knows?

Image
Momma Eagle sits on the nest, the eggs should be hatching anytime. Her mate was killed in an
accident over a week ago. Chance of survival for the babies is very small. :(
