Two elderly Lakewood residents were victims of a phone scam. One lost $1,700 and the other $2,200. Both residents received calls from a man representing himself as the lawyer for their grandson. The caller claimed that the grandson was arrested in Mexico and needed the money immediately to get out of jail. Both residents sent the money from the Western Union in Giant Eagle to an address in Canada. The residents were approached a second time, but realized that they were victims and called Lakewood Police. Unfortunately the Lakewood Police can't help. Please make sure if you are approached by this method or any other request for cash to help out a friend or relative that you verify the information. Elderly residents are particularly prone to theses scams and should be warned about them and told to call a family member to confirm any request for money.
