Mike,
Would you mind passing this on to block captains so they can disseminate to their members?
There have been some copper thefts at vacant homes (often with for sale signs) lately, with a few in Ward 3. Other cities have had similar incidents, some involving work vans/trucks that appear to be labeled as legitimate, small companies (rehab, plumbing, etc.). If you see work being done at such homes, or even occupied houses, can you please try to obtain a license plate number? Please be accurate. Some Ohio letters look similar ("O" and "Q", "I" and "T", etc.) Any other information, make, model, names/stickers and of course suspect descriptions are important as well, but nothing beats a verified plate number. If this is not feasible, please call our department to check and identify the workers. Even if the persons turn out to be performing legitimate work, they will tell their associates that Lakewood residents are watching. Unfortunately, "some" of the smaller, legitimate contractors stray at times and commit such crimes in between jobs, appearing to be performing another job.
Communicate with your neighbors and let them know if you are having legitimate work being done at your home by a contractor.
As always, I can be contacted with any concerns, but please, IF YOU SEE AN ACTIVE INCIDENT OR SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS, DO NOT CALL ME. CALL OUR DISPATCH CENTER (216) 521-1234) SO THE CLOSEST POLICE UNIT CAN BE SENT IMMEDIATELY.
Thanks!
Matt Wintrick
Ward 3 Neighborhood Officer
