Cox vs. Raycom

Post by Michael Deneen »

As a Cox subscriber, I lost access to channels 19 and 43 on New Year's due to a dispute over carriage fees.

Frankly, I'm amazed at how little I have missed those channels. I'm not a fan of CBS's dramas, nor of its Monday comedy lineup. Channel 43 has been pretty irrelevant since the demise of SuperHost and the Prize Movie.
My first problem would be the NFL playoff game on Sunday at 1pm.

How much of an inconvenience is this causing local customers?
Does anyone have insight on when an agreement might be reached?

All I can say is ..it's a good thing that "Dancing With the Stars" is on ABC! :D

I, like Mike, will tremendously miss "The NFL on CBS" ... and "60 Minutes" and "Face the Nation". Other than that y'all can keep their two dozen versions of "CIS" et al.

The last line of the article David linked to is:

"There was no word from Cox on whether the new transmission agreement with Raycom would alter rates for cable subscribers."

Anyone wanna lay some odds?

*Full Disclosure Cox Communications is an advertiser in the Observer(s), and underwrite
other LO and Jim O'Bryan projects in the past and the future.

I have had Cox, Dish, DirectTV, virtually all at the same time in the past. I am now down
to Cox, not because they are advertisers, but because their pay system though a pain in
the ass, is about the most fair out there. I believe selection is better than Dish, and damn
close to Direct TV, though I do miss, Link TV that airs "Democracy Now.". I have found
they will meet prices of others. Uverse is not an option for me on moral reasons.

My single complaint is, they give you a great rate when you sign up, and then after 6
months or 12 months it goes to regular price. You have to call Cox, and tell them you are
switching to another provider and go through the shut down before the person on the
phone says, "Well if it simply price, let me see what I can do for you..." At that point, after
the yearly charade they will do nearly anything to get you to stay, but not all at one time.
The call, once you get good, takes about 15 minutes, and can save you about $1,400 on
full services over a year.

What really gets me, after 15 minutes of talking to a very pleasant sales person, and
basically bargaining for rugs in Marrakesh, they will say. "Hey, when this runs out, give us
a call. We would always rather have you stay with Cox, than switch."

FWIW
