Lakewood Keeping It Real, In A Charlie Brown Way

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Last night I took a short break from working on the some of my projects to take in the Holiday
Lights and feeling that swirls around Lakewood this time of year. When things are not going
110%, sometimes it helps to take a break, and suck in the neighborhood, neighbors, the
Emerald Canyon, our magnificent lake front, or at this time, the festive lights that are up
all over the city celebrating Christmas.

So as I drove west on Detroit Avenue, from the East Side of Lakewood, and entered the
incredible, and now easy to find your way around, DowntowN area of Lakewood, I noticed
that DowntowN had gotten their stars up and lit!!!! This is always a sign the Christmas is
near, and that all the fun associated with it is just around the corner.

Image

Then I looked at the first star in DowntowN, an area that has just received millions of dollars
in renovation, clean-up, way finding, and a general dedication by city hall to everything
that is retail in this area, and noticed, 2/3rds of the lights in the first star were burnt out?
Ohhhhhh the horror! How could this happen, the gateway to DowntowN is even more shabby
than it was last year! I mean how could anyone string up lights that were burned out?
Weren't they tested? My family always tested lights before they went on the tree. And
let's not forget the major snafu of the Light Up Lakewood lights being turned on, only to
have nothing happen! Certainly, after they were plugged in and way up in that truck they
would changed out the lights, I mean you are already there, it only makes sense. But no,
we had this as our first star in the shopping district!

Image

And then it hit me, literally hit me like a ton of brinks. Of course, this was Lakewood's very
well thought out homage to a holiday tradition we have all come to love, and cherish.
"A Charlie Brown's Christmas" where Charlie Brown brings to the school play the most
screwed up bare little Christmas Tree he could find, because it too needed a Christmas,
and the love of those that dance around a Christmas Tree. That this tree, like all trees,
and all living things need, love, respect, celebration, song and dance. This was really one
of the most beautiful acts I have ever witnessed by Lakewood City Hall, and I give them
a standing ovation for doing it. After all, we all need to remember the lesson taught to us
in this classic holiday cartoon. So I have decided to adopt it, and I hope we all go, with our
kids, friends and family down to the lonely Snow Flake in front of the Barton Center, and
look up, and remember.

Love, respect, remembrance, and celebration is the meaning of Christmas, the reason
for the season, not the number of lights, or fireworks, or celebrations.

Thank you Lakewood City Hall, for keeping it real, in a Charlie Brown sort of way.

Party on.

FYI ... "Charlie Brown Christmas" will air this evening (Wed, 11/28/12) at 8:00PM on WEWS (ABC) and again on Tuesday, 12/18/12 at 8:00PM on WEWS (ABC).

*as always .. please check your cable provider!

A few of my favorite lines/scenes:

___________________________________________________________________________
Lucy Van Pelt: Look, Charlie, let's face it. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It's run by a big eastern syndicate, you know.

___________________________________________________________________________
Charlie Brown: I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming, but I'm not happy. I don't feel the way I'm supposed to feel. I just don't understand Christmas, I guess. I like getting presents and sending Christmas cards and decorating trees and all that, but I'm still not happy. I always end up feeling depressed.
Linus Van Pelt:
Charlie Brown, you're the only person I know who can take a wonderful season like Christmas and turn it into a problem. Maybe Lucy's right. Of all the Charlie Browns in the world, you're the Charlie Browniest.

... and finally (in the spirit of Jim's opening post):

___________________________________________________________________________
Linus Van Pelt: I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It's not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.

Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?"

Hey Peter,

These are great quotes. Especially the last one. It reminds me of how everybody came together to help decorate the little tree.

I was thinking that the refund the City of Lakewood got from the fireworks we never had-- it was about $20,000 right? -- in all fairness that money should be used in a way that could benefit everyone and bring us together the way fireworks at Lakewood Park do. Maybe instead of fireworks we get snowflake lights where all the bulbs work, or maybe more snowflake lights for all the dark patches you can see in Jim's pictures, or maybe trees whose Christmas lights actually extend into their branches.

That $20,000 could go along way, and it would be just like the whole city offering it, since it's the refund for what we lost in July. Instead of us all together on blankets and chairs at Lakewood Park, and on porches, and front lawns and roofs of buildings oohing and ahhing over fireworks, we can get together for the lights.
I can hear it now...

I am not sure, that lights on every pole makes things better. Here is a photo of Detroit Ave. in Cleveland.

Image

Nicer?

Please note they are still copying Lakewood. On the right side 1/3 way back is a snowflake that is
not working. How cliche, we have many more of these than la-te-da Gordon Square.

Lakewood, striving to keep it real!

Question: If Lakewood's premier winter event - Light Up Lakewood - is today, why have any lights been lit prior to tonight?

It's kind of like having Fourth of July Fireworks on June 15th ... assuming Lakewood had Fourth of July Fireworks.

That's the Ward Three star.

In keeping with the Holiday Spirit, Ward Three spent its tax dollars on a hotel study for Ward Two.

Thanks, Ward Three!

I disagree. Although NASA debunked the myth that "no two snowflakes are alike" in a 2006 study, there are many variations. Lakewood's snowflakes and their placement appear more genuine and I am cheered up every time I see their light brightening our city's streets.

Meg

I agree with you. it is nice having different snowflakes. Well let me put it this way, after talking with
Ed Favre at Light up Lakewood the other night. Lakewood, for all the little faults, is very real, and
very much who we are as a city. While I often point out that the results of city hall and other groups
are far different(lower) than what they promised, I would not trade it for all the Crocker Parks in the world.

While we have the Charlie Brown Snowflake, I am glad we do not have...

Image
The plastic faux rocks that have to be nailed into the ground and covered up.

When I took a photo of what looked like a dismal window display at Dollar General and came back
and cropped it, and spruced it up a little, my thoughts went from "hideous" to, "At least they are
making an effort, something not everyone here does, and that it is nice. Even though fake, and pretty
ratty in appearance, it is still and effort from a Lakewood retailer to make the city a little nicer in this
holiday season of giving.

Image
Yes, the Charlie Brown tree, with the Charlie Brown snowflake is Lakewood real,
and really Lakewood. You have to admit, it looks pretty good.

I once remarked that Lakewood was a snowdrift of dysfunctional snowflakes, and so it is, and it pays
to remember though many over promise to make a name for themselves, or deliver a false idol. In
the end Lakewood finds its norm, and the battle cry of some, "Good enough for now" echos through
the streets and Downtown corridors, until it strikes you deep in the heart and soul, and makes one
smile and think. You know, good enough for now, is also good enough, and that is not bad.

Yes Meg, I will take the different snowflakes over the machine precision of Crocker Park or even
Gordon Square.

Damn I love this city, because of the people, like you.

I agree with Meg. There's kind of militaristic order and sameness about the Gordon Square snowflakes that kind of has that "paid for with grants" look to it...

I actually would just like all the bulbs in our snowflakes to work. And maybe a couple more to light some of those really dark patches. So I guess that would be... "almost good enough for now"? I think we could get them to be good enough for now.

And to continue with Jim's examination of the phrase: good enough for now, is good enough. Good enough is good.

And speaking of good... here's something really good! For I don't know how many years in a row... but my whole time in Lakewood and my kids' whole lives:

The Christmas train is back on my street, with wheels that really turn, and the light to guide its way. With the neighbors who keep their bushes trimmed like a train for the whole year, just for this season!

I saw my neighbor high up on a ladder working on it a week ago and honked and gave him a thumbs-up. He gave me back a smile and a nod, as if to say, 'We got this handled, never fear. We know you're counting on us and we like it.'

And I, once again, was so glad to be here.

Jim-- I don't get this one at all. Are all those little green things lights?

Here is another one that's trippy because at night Santa's reindeer don't seem to be attached to anything, and look like you just caught them as they were about to disappear into the sky.

This has been one of the kids' favorites for years. If you look closely, you can see the mastermind, Tom, standing in the doorway. I didn't notice him at first and then he waved at me and I almost dropped my camera.

Betsy,

Thanks for the train update! I sent David out on a walk a while ago, to see if it was up yet but it was not. I was worried we wouldn't get to enjoy it this year on our drives around town to look at lights.

Thanks again!

Please tell me it ain't so!

Last night I had friends who drove in from the Vermillion area to take in the "City of Lights" have dinner,
see some music at Mars Bar, and see the lights. We drove down Detroit as the first thing they wanted
was their photo taken under the "Charlie Brown Snowflake" as their 5-year-old daughter said.

So we went down there...

Image
But alas, it was fixed. Well, kind of...

Image
It would appear they brought the truck around and went up and replaced some of the burnt out bulbs.
The very bulbs that gave it its loveable characteristic, so instead of being the worst most screwed up
snowflake ever. It is just another snowflake with some burned out bulbs.

How anyone could take something so loveable and mess it up enough to not be right, and not be
loveable is beyond me. But, on to finding something else to rejoice over in the city.
