POTUS - Obama At Burke Lakefront Airport - 10/25/12

Post by stephen davis »

Please forgive the lack of photo quality. These shots are from my phone in difficult lighting.

Image
12,000 people (according to the Burke Lakefront Airport Commissioner) waiting.

Cameras prepare on the Cut Riser. This is the riser used for profile shots. The Main Riser views the podium head on. All of these political events are set up this way for media cameras.

Image
"I need you, Ohio!"

The President's voice was quite hoarse at the end of his marathon 48 hour coast-to-coast tour. He still managed to croak out a crowd-pleasing speech.

After listing some of the things that define the best parts of our American culture, he said, "That's who we are." An audience member yelled, "We never quit!"

Obama continued with:

"Our destiny is not written for us. It is written by us."

"Ohio, I believe in you."

"We're going to finish what we started."

Image
Preparing to leave. I saw a military officer carry a large black bag to the plane. Reminds me that the President is on call 24/7 for any emergency.

Image
Sleeves rolled up, a quick wave, a run up the steps to the plane, another turn and a wave, then inside. As soon as the stairs were pulled away, Air Force One started moving toward the runway. Once there, it took off without delay.

I watched the take-off and headed for Lakewood.

It was difficult to get home. I had to head east out of the lot on the North Marginal, all the way to East 55th, then south to St. Clair, then a zig-zag home through downtown. The Shoreway was completely closed for the event. Police were everywhere. All along the airport fences, heavy city trucks, like snowplows and dump trucks, were parked to block access.

When I got to my house and settled in, I turned on the TV. A news broadcast showed Air Force One landing in DC. I barely beat Obama home.

Some people have commented to me that they were surprised that Air Force One could land at Burke. I also had my doubts. I thought the runway at Burke was too short for a 747 landing. This plane was a 757, I was told by the Secret Sevice, with a presidential paint job.

A 757 can access more airports and it is cheaper to fly than the 747 Air Force One. The campaign has to pay for the use of the plane, so I can understand the use of Air Force Three-quarters.

Wikipedia quotes the Federal Aviation Administration with, "Air Force One is the official air traffic control call sign of an United States Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States."

Steve Davis, I’ve seen some great political photos taken by Jim O’Bryan on his phone in difficult lighting.

I know Jim O’Bryan.

Jim O’Bryan is a friend of mine.

Steve Davis, you're no Jim O’Bryan.

And ... by the way ... where was Jim O'Bryan?

I am always amazed at pictures like this.

The world has gotten crazy. More people worried about capturing the event on their phones than
seem to care about trying to actually see the event.

In a sea of arms, it is still the arms closest that see anything.

Everyone one of these devices is creating a file, with a 5 - 55 digit number each time the shutter
closes. So if it is video, we are looking at 5-25 x 55 unique digital numbers a second. Which are also
encoded with aperture, shutter speed, iso number, date, time of day, and often event, latitude and
longitude, serial number of the device, software used, and type of file.

Then they are transferred by the millions to websites like this, tmblr, twitter, facebook, instagram,
apple cloud, google plus, etc, where they are tagged with caption, time of upload, file size, and
that company's 55-180 digit number, and finally tagged with a location so the image can be found
from anywhere, even if "secure."

Pretty damn wild, if you ask me.

And none of it really exists!

Hey, Jimmy!

Where were you?

POTUS comes into town and we are all stuck looking at Steve's horrible photos.

What gives?

I suppose Stevie's POTUS photos might be fuzzy because he was using a Czech Republic phone.

Matt

Just kidding, we were relying on one of our new photographers Tyler Wick to cover this. At some
point the old guard has to step back and let the young dogs run.

Awesome photos, Tyler!

This City indeed needs more Lakewoodites, like you Tyler, bringing their Observations together for a clearer picture.
