New Lamps On Detroit -

The new lights in front of the Drug Mart Plaza offer a glimpse of what could be.

While the lights being put up in front of Drug Mart Plaza are a nice flare, it made me wonder
how they fit in with the 8-year plan Mayor Summers has repeatedly spoken of.

It brings back a conversation I had with a city worker almost 6 months ago, that the lights
being removed from Detroit, were not because of safety or a study but for esthetics. Which
would explain why the light in front of Lakewood Library, one of the most used walking
intersections in the city, as the lights, and for that matter the street lights on other side of
the street will clash with the much nicer "old-style" lamps in front of Drug Mart Plaza.

It does not explain how the Manor Park light heavily used by school children and seniors
ended up on the very rarely used Spring Garden and Detroit, where it remains flashing
all of the time. I was told it was moved there to compensate for the heavy traffic coming
out of Dunkin Donuts in the AM, but the study would seem to predate that store.

Anyway kudos to Drug Mart for putting in the nice lights.

Well I don't have to guess too much how much these lights costs, as these appear to be the same type of lights that we installed earlier this year on Maple Cliff.

Much better for the residents then the old version, will be curious to see how they light up the sidewalk and portions of the street.

I am figuring Drug Mart paid for them, as the city just put up new big lights across the
street and to do both would seem foolish, after all the real street lights will make these nice
but very redundant. They are down by Rockport, where they also appear redundant, but
I like seeing Sam Miller spend his money on Lakewood..

It looks good, and the wires are all underground, another good move by DM and or the city.

I am still curious how these fit into that "8-year plan" as the use of them seem spotty at best,
and with no rhyme or reason. Also why is Drug Mart built a proper distance off the street
while CVS and McDonalds (which is not hideous) was forced to build right to the edge? Again
"8-year-plan" or dartboard?

Wouldn't those light look great in front of St. James! The School Board Building (possible
historic landmark if two groups have their way) Sinagra Park (Lucy) and elsewhere?

Jim,

I was presuming DM paid for the new lights, if my count is right that is 7 new lights, it should look nice at night.
Yes they would look nice around St. James.
I was approached last spring by a group of homeowners on the east end of town about our (Maple Cliff HOA) experience with putting in the new lights. They are hoping to install them on their streets. So maybe it is something that could spread across the city and not just in pockets.

I know there were also plans for old lights on Arthur, but I thought they would be more like
the ones on the side of CVS. Actually the residents of Arthur had planned to rebuild the
stone wall that was taken down in the 60s.

So maybe it will catch on. There the residents were being assessed $3,500 each.
