LAKEWOOD COMMISSIONER’S YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP SOFTBALL TOURNAMEN

The First Annual Lakewood Commissioner's Youth Scholarship Softball Tournament begins at 10:00am. today at Memorial Fields #1 and #3 in the Metroparks. Second round begins at 2:00pm. and the final round at 4:15 at Foxx Field. Award gathering will be hosted this evening at the Around The Corner.

Thanks to Debbie Clark, Jesse Garling, Joe Stolitza, Don Sharp, Janet Gowan and Leslie Krogman for organizing the tournament. Sponsored by the Lakewood Commmunity Recreation & Education Commission, Adult Athletic Commission, and Youth Athletic Commission, tournament proceeds will go to scholarships for Lakewood youth to participate in Lakewood Recreation programs.

Teams include Pugs Mahone, Irish Kevin's, Riverwood Cafe, West Park Station, Kenilworth and Team Juris. Donors include Around The Corner, Geigers, Five Guys, University Tees, Serpentini Arena at Winterhurst, Cleveland Botanical Gardens and the Sharp Family.

The tournament was a success and made about $1,000. A check for that amount will be presented at tonight's Board of Education meeting. The money will be used for youth athletic scholarships. Planning is already underway for next year's tournament.
Also at tonight's meeting (7:00pm. @ Garfield), there will be a special recognition for former Community Recreation and Education Commissioners Mark Twohig and Don McQuilkin for their many years of volunteer service.
