Why are morons still employed?

Post by Ryan Salo »

With the unemployment rate at 8%+ why are so many under trained bad workers still employed?

Over the last month I have been consciously paying attention to workers I interact with, from servers, nurses, doctors, appraisers, title attorneys, real estate agents, desk workers, store associates. I have noticed a lot of folks are just really bad at what they do; they give wrong information, don't really care and have a general bad attitude. I try to cheer them up and encourage them but it is like they just don't give a darn.

How can they stay employed with that attitude and performance?

Are the "smarter hard working people" just sticking with unemployment for 3+++ years and then welfare/disability?

You would think every industry would have the best of the best right now with such are large base to draw from.

I am really confused, are business just not willing to fire bad workers? Are American workers slowly giving in to the attitude of I'll get something even if I don't work hard?

Is this Obama's fault? :)

Has anyone else run into this?

I've been off the grid for 2 years and 4 months. never took any unemployment even though I paid into it at every job. When I got laid off, a freelance assignment arose and then several after that. I've tried a number of interviews for positions. I won't say that age discrimination enters into it, but I did seem to surprise people when having done well on the phone interview, they saw me in person and seemed shocked that I had white hair. My theory is that it's counter-intuitive. Your point is that we are in bad times, so why do the idiots keep their positions. I think it's because they are in position for all the wrong reasons.

Plus I've noticed that the hiring managers do not want any competition from people who are motivated and experienced. Hell that would resemble work. So they are only interested in minimum experience and "yes-persons" who they can easily manipulate to take the fall for any actual decisions that are made that have any risk attached. Large companies have become so mired down in political correctness and policies, they can barely operate. No decisions can be made without consensus, legal analysis, risk analysis, diversity analysis, analysis paralysis.

I know people working at a very large bank that have no idea what their job is (because their bosses got re-org'd and the new organization hasn't really been vetted yet) This has happened on a regular basis for the past 4 years. Multiply this by tens of thousands in just this one company and you see a trend for a country beginning a decline.

I think there are a lot of factors involved.

First, most managers do not like to fire people. Unless you are really nasty, it is uncomfortable to throw someone to the wolves, so there is a natural bias against removing someone, even if they are not the greatest employee.

Second, many of the workers you list are not among the best paid, so the more talented people will be looking elsewhere.

Third, any time you remove one employee and hire another, you will have to incur some expenses, both in time and money, training the new worker, and during the training period, less work will be done.

Fourth, people who become unemployed have expenses, and I think they are reluctant to take a lower paying job, that may never pay as much as the job they lost, so, perhaps unrealistically, they wait for their old job to come back, or for an equivalent or better job to open up. It is possibly more comfortable to live on various benefits and hopes, than to take a lower paying job. The politicians keep extending unemployment, without requiring much effort by the recipient. I think a better idea would be to allow two months of unemployment benefits while the recipient seeks work; after two months, the recipient should have to undergo a personal evaluation to determine whether he has adequate skills. If not, he should undergo training to get current skills (while receiving unemployment benefits). I don't know what to do with those who are untrainable; perhaps some public service work at low pay for a limited period would produce some level of employability, and get our litter picked up and our bridges painted. Since most public works, such as construction, are done by contractors, perhaps we should require those contractors to use a percentage of unemployed people at a lower wage than fully qualified workers enjoy.
