Detroit Theater Its Last Days...

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

The Detroit Theater is looking pretty shoddy these days. "DETROIT" missing from the marquee.

Image
What is left of the marquee broken.

Image
The next sign the end is near. As I drove by the Fire Department was practicing.

Image
They wanted to use it for flat roof practice, but found the roof not strong enough.

Image
They wanted to do inside practice, but found it too dangerous.

Image
So it was kept to practice on the big ladder.

To the window but not in!

We know what comes next.

More to follow.

Does anyone know the actual date on which the theater comes down? I'll be in town this month, so I hope it's time and I can take some photos of it before it's gone.

Hah, nice, I was walking all over the areas they didn't find safe a week ago. Guess I'm lucky? It was pretty week in spots, but didn't feel like eminent cave in. But then again I wasn't wearing 50-100lb of gear either.

Ivor, Its to bad you couldn't come wither when I was in last week or in February. I'm sure you could have gotten some amazing shots.

First part of the marquee falls, with only one other person watching.

Going...

...going...

...GONE!

What really got me is that it went with no fanfare, no one beeping, no one stopping.
My other experiences with buildings being torn down was much more emotion coming
from people going by, and people coming down to watch it happen. This time it was me,
and one other guy that has sat with me at every building I have watched come down.

I took many more, will put them in the photoblog later.

Well, I'm glad I wasn't there to hear the breaking glass, and watch everything come crashing down to the sidewalk. Death by inferiority complex. Oh thank you McDonald's for moving from Sloane so we could clear the way for our development and coming over here to feed our lucky children and mess up our traffic. Lakewood is the coolest suburb. And in fact, it's true. Clearly people need to become more active, more proactive in letting our government know how we feel. A well organized group could have made something interesting out of this building. With this Community Vision thing, "the government" is reaching out its hand. Shawn Juris tries hard, that is true. So does Mayor Summers. Maybe if we could put some of our trying in the same place.

And Jim, I counter your terrible pictures, with some really cool ones of my own (not in the sense that the photos are properly composed or worthy of being viewed by professionals-- but in the sense that they're of a great place to go in Lakewood that is thriving and fun.)

Excellent taco stand out front, fresh food, Fri-Sat-Sun. If you like carnitas--- there is a counter inside where you can get it any day, ready to eat, and wonderful. On Lakewood Heights, around Bunts.

Betsy, I agree, La Plaza is a great locally owned store. I got several things there for my Cinco de Mayo party. However, just to be clear, it is technically in Cleveland.
