A woman on Lake Road walked into her kitchen this morning to find a thin male standing
there, with a knife, she grabbed a baseball bat to defend herself, while calling her
husband who grabbed a tennis racket and screamed for the thief to leave. Pausing, and
seeing the husband he decided to take off instead of fighting.
The police were called at they had the thief in custody within minutes. The thief had
discarded a backpack the woman saw him with. Police recovered it, and found several
other weapons, an IPad, and a check made out to the woman.
Once again kudos to the Lakewood Police for their fast action on something that could have
been much worse.
More shortly.

This isn't your normal break-in. Most thieves prefer an empty home yet most of the recent publicized Lakewood break-ins are different - the owner is home.
Any speculation on why this may be?

Just speculation, and this is merely speculation.
Desperation, opportunity, past success, grapevine.
I do believe the penalty for daylight burglaries is more severe. So it would push towards
desperation, and opportunity.
As the invader came through the garage into the kitchen, one would have to think at least
one car was able to be seen, so he would have to know someone is home. I am not sure
when the call went out, but I did get a call around ten of a lot of police on Lake Road.
People do desperate things in desperate times. Drugs abuse often brings on desperate
times, as does the economy, the season, and yes even the way we live. Let's not forget,
Jean Valjean was sentenced for breaking a window and stealing a loaf of bread.
