On the Pipe

Further oomph from the big players to build a 2,700 kilometer oil pipeline from Canada through the northern U.S. border all the way to Houston Texas! There it will be refined and shipped 2000-odd kilometers all across the U.S.

This is an enormous strategic risk. Everytime a hurricane hits the Houston area we hear about spot shortages of gasoline all over the country. Houston needs to focus on oil coming from the Gulf and East Texas.

The big monopoly Houston refiners must be exerting a lot of pull to have gotten a 2,700 KM oil pipeline approved. So far the estimated price is 7 billion dollars. it is obviously going to go way over budget. and the feds and states will end up paying billions to facilitate it. There are too many highways and rivers and streets to go through. and one random car accident or tractor stray hunting bullet can stymie delivery of oil across that 2,700 Kilometers for days! this is enormously contrary to demands for secure and consistent oil supplies.

The Keystone Oil Pipeline from Canada to Houston is a terrible idea. that is how you can tell the houston refining oligarchs must have greased a lot of wheels to get it rolling.

So, build more refineries in the north. it is safer that way. there is plenty of derelict old-timey industrial wasteland to build new refineries on! you can worry less about polluting lots that are already heavily polluted. I'm sure getting the legislators to sign off on it will cost less than all the money we're going to end up paying for a 2,700 kilometer pipeline from western canada to the southeastern united states.

In conclusion, the Keystone Pipeline idea must be destroyed!
