Cain Vaults to Lead in Poll

CONCORD, N.H.—Former restaurant-industry executive Herman Cain has catapulted to the lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, as GOP voters grow disenchanted with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and remain wary of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.

Drawn by Mr. Cain's blunt, folksy style in recent debates, 27% of Republican primary voters picked him as their first choice for the nomination, a jump of 22 percentage points from six weeks ago.

Mr. Romney held firm in second place at 23%, his same share as in a Journal poll in late August, ...

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters shows Cain attracting 43% support, while Obama earns 41%. Given such a matchup, eight percent (8%) prefer some other candidate, and another eight percent (8%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Sorry, I don't trust any survey that I can't see more than a sentence of.

Perhaps you have access to a poll that will properly present the data and doesn't ask me for money first?

Well Thealaxia, as a current ECONOMICS student, you should understand that this is a Conservative idea of a charming marketing plan.

Sharon,

My name is spelled THEALEXA. I can promise you that my parents never spelled it with an "i".

And yes, I realize it is. It is also the reason that as a mathematics student, I think that everyone should be exposed to a basic statistics course. That way they can read things like that and realize that regardless of their stance on the issue, data can be misleading when not represented in full.

Why does everyone think economics is the same as marketing? My school doesn't even have a course in marketing. That's like a business school thing.

I don't, but I do see that someone who truly wants to be good at economics should understand how companies get customers to buy and/or invest. Sorry about the name thing, it was unintentional.

Hmm, that might be more consumer theory than marketing.

It's just a general pet peeve of economics students that people think we are studying marketing, or accounting, or business. I mean, we are supposed to know how it works, but...

Either way, polls were released in Time magazine that suggests that a majority of America wants higher taxes on those making over a million dollars, and as Cain claims to want to do the opposite, I don't see how a poll like the one posted here can be taken seriously. I bet they had bad sampling procedure.

Or purposely made up the story. It's either lying or pathetic fiction writing.

Many assumptions are made about people, I worked at a Master's Level, with many people at that educational level working for me. Wouldn't it be great if people with an Economics focus had a minor in Marketing and Business?

There was recently a story out of Harvard about data fabrication...it could happen anywhere...

I actually think it would be more helpful for an economics major to have a minor or double major in mathematics. But certainly if an econ major wants to pursue a career in marketing they better take at least one class.

Survey Methods
Results are based on telephone interviews conducted as part of Gallup Daily tracking Oct. 3-16, 2011, with random samples of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Questions asking about the eight candidates measured in this research were rotated among randomly selected samples of Republicans each night; over the 14-day period, each candidate was rated by approximately 1,500 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of 1,000 Likely Republican Primary voters shows Cain and Romney each attracting 29% of the vote while Gingrich is a distant third at 10%. Texas Governor Rick Perry was the frontrunner when he entered the race and has suffered through a series of poor debate performances while sliding to fourth place at nine percent (9%). Oh I see, this is just a poll of Republican primary voters, not a poll of all Americans.

Good to know.

This isn't related to the poll Roy posted before, which you still can't view.

I wonder how long Cain will be a fad before someone else catches the party's fancy.

LAS VEGAS — The good news continued for Herman Cain Friday, as the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO won the Western Republican Leadership Conference straw poll of GOP presidential contenders, edging out former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich — and leaving Texas Gov. Rick Perry in a distant fifth place.

Mr. Cain, whose longshot campaign got a major boost by winning a major Florida straw poll last month, received nearly 31 percent of the vote and Mr. Romney pulled in nearly 29 percent of the vote. Mr. Gingrich, who has also risen in recent national polls after his campaign’s shaky start, secured more than 20 percent of the vote. Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished with about 10 percent, Mr. Perry received almost 4 percent, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota received just 1 percent.

The results follow Mr. Cain’s surprise victory in the so-called Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando last month, which was seen as a big blow to Mr. Perry’s front-runner status at the time.
