The Washington Post of October 20, 1001, has an interesting article on the spread of charter schools. I attempt to enclose a link, but I'm not technologically adroit, so I'm not sure it will work.

I'm surprised by the number of parents who have opted out of the public school systems. I know charter schools, as any enterprise, can have some bad apples, but if you keep an eye on them, you can usually tell if they are delivering the goods.
I'm visiting our son in San Diego and I was surprised to find that he and his wife, who are unrealistically liberal, have moved their kids to a charter school. He's working now, but when he gets home I'll be interested in hearing their reasons.
I'm not an enthusiastic advocate of charter schools, but they are one way to put pressure on the public schools to improve their performance; to date, all they seem to do is parrot talking points about why they have it harder than the charter schools. I favor neighborhood schools and never sent my kids to private schools because of that. I think the Cleveland Public Schools were destroyed when they implemented busing; a better remedy would have been to build schools on the borders separating the people, and having those schools draw from both communities.

Charter schools
Society in every state is a blessing, but the Government even in its best state is but a necessary evil...
