I attended the LHS opening football game Friday night.
The players, band and cheerleaders did a great job. The game was also pretty well attended on the Lakewood side (certainly far more than the 600 fans reported by another news site).
However, it is obvious that Lakewood should not be playing Lincoln West. The LW kids played very hard, but only had 20 eligible players. The game was never the least bit competitive, and did nothing to help either program in the long run.
Nonconference scheduling is a very difficult business. However, I have to believe that a better opponent was possible. If LHS insists on playing a Senate League team, I suggest they call John Marshall. Marshall's team is very beatable, yet would provide a better challenge. Unless I'm mistaken, LHS has NEVER played John Marshall....which is ironic since the schools have shared the same street for over 100 years.
