Big Brother Update...

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Back in august 2010 it was noted that some cameras were going up along Clifton and other streets.

And now Law Director Kevin Butler stopped by to explain to all of us that these cameras
were for nothing more than to help correct the over idling by cars at key intersections.

While he did admit it was part of a grant from the Homeland Security Department, he
was pretty sure that even though they looked just like the high definition cameras
Scotland Yard have all over London including Trafalgar Square where they can tell you
the name and occupation of everyone wearing a red hand knit sweater over the past 6
months, they are not those kind.

OK

Then today, outside my office window this...

...new smog cameras in front of the office.

... but these look more like the cameras that keep the dealers honest in Vegas. You
don't imagine these could be for idling dealers? Huh!

Just sayin...

We need to keep a close eye on that Observer crew!

I thought this was mentioned at the state of the city address...that more cameras were going to be put up in the parks and around downtown?

I think this is a good thing... cameras in or around private residence would be a whole different topic, in public areas it could only help deter criminal behaviour (would it not)?

I think they're watching you Jim. Too coincidental to put one right outside your office window. ;)

Now that would be boring.

They missed the good stuff by about 25 years!

Right, that makes sense.

Security cameras that everyone knows are there and act as both a deterrent and a law enforcement tool
makes sense. Saying they are not security cameras would seem to only be good in helping after the crime.

That would be the point I have been making since they we first describe to me as there to help control idling.

The London cameras and computers can do some pretty wild things, and pretty damn quickly.

But everyone in London, including the homeless know thy are there, and can do pretty wild things.

FWIW

Jim,

The recent camera which was posted is obviously for some type of monitoring purpose. Are you saying that you believe the devices on the traffic light poles are actual cameras and are monitoring/detecting more than traffic?

Would you consider yourself pro or anti surveillance in public areas?

I am pro-deterrent, and pro-enforcement.

However, I do always wonder where it is headed.

I glanced at the cameras on Clifton the other day and got the feeling they were point a bit the wrong way. Seems to me they are angled more for reading licences plates as you drive through the intersection than seeing cars idling at the intersections. I could be way off base as I did not have the time to inspect closers but that is just what I thought. doooobi doooooobi dooooo.
