Here is a little more information about the event tomorrow night. If you want to learn more about the Lakewood Family Collaborative or would like to attend our next event please contact Kristine Pagsuyoin at lakewoodfamilycollab@gmail.com.

Did you know, school supplies for some Lakewood families are considered a luxury?

This message is coming to you on behalf of the Lakewood School Supplies Initiative (a committee of The Lakewood Family Collaborative).

This new group was created when a gap was discovered in providing school supplies to those students most in need. There are currently other organizations doing a fantastic job generously supporting Lakewood K – 5 students with school supplies. However, there is only so much they can do based on the incoming requests. Our Middle Schools and High Schools have plenty of students who will fall behind in academics due to lack of school supplies.

We firmly believe all students should have the opportunity to learn regardless of need. It has been proven that a student starting their school year off with all of the tools they need will have a better chance at a successful academic year. It is too easy for these students to fall in-between the cracks and drop off the academic track.

Over the past months, we have been working with the guidance counselors from Garfield Middle School, Harding Middle School and Lakewood High School as well as the Lakewood Department of Student Services. With all of their valuable input, the below items were determined to be most in need for those students:

Items needed:

Loose Leaf Paper
Pens (blue/black)
Pencils
Pocket Folders
1” and 1 ½” Binders
Notebooks
Locker Organizers
Combination Locks
Pencil Pouches
Calculators (TI-30X)

The Department of Student Services has agreed to assist us in the delivery of these items to our neediest students before the start of the school year.

How you can help:

Consider purchasing one of the items listed and dropping them off at one of our collections sites by Monday, August 8th:

o Lakewood YMCA

o Lakewood Recreation Department (1470 Warren Rd)

o PNC Bank (across from Giant Eagle)

Post the attached flyer at a Lakewood business, favorite coffee joint, etc. Anywhere you think visibility to this cause would assist.

Please join us at Jammy Buggars on Tuesday, July 19th , for dinner. 15% of your meal will go to the committee for the purpose of purchasing supplies when you mention “school supplies fundraiser”

Forward this message to other interested Lakewood families or membership groups

By each of us doing a little, we can make a significant difference in a Lakewood student’s academic life.

Hi Bill,

Students are identified by the Department of Student Services (which is part of the Lakewood City School District). For privacy reasons, neither the names of the students, or how they are identified by the department, is released.

The School Supplies Fundraiser is donating all items to the Department of Student Services to distribute as needed for the coming school year. Any items remaining will be held for students who may transfer in during the year and, if any are remaining after the year, will roll over to the next school year.

We hope that all students will get a chance to succeed.

Hope that helps answer and please let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks!

Bill--- Matt Lee responded with an application process as to what a student had to "do" to get the "free stuff".

Is that an answer to your inquiry or did you have a larger issue in mind?

It has been rescheduled. The event at Jammy Buggars will take place on August 2nd for the entire evening. Simply have dinner and 15% of the proceeds will be donated to the Lakewood School Supplies Initiative.

Just a side note: Many businesses have been affected by the power outages in that neighborhood. Food as been thrown out or owners have not been able to open at all. If anyone plans to eat out in the next week or so I think it would be great to visit one of the restaurants on that block (Westwood extending west to to 56 West).
