Charter Fishing

Can anyone recommend a good charter fishing boat? I've got some family coming into town and they suggested taking a day to fish out on Lake Erie.

The first question is actually, is it worth it to head out on the lake at this point in the summer? (isn't walleye season over)

and if it's still worth it, anyone know of someone with a boat that offers full or half day charters?

I've been fishing all my life, but I have to admit, I know absolutely nothing about fishing here in Ohio. I got a couple of poles and some fresh water gear for my son for his birthday, but so far we havn't really had much luck down in the metroparks.

Hi Brett--

The Linda Mae at Wildwood Park on Lakeshore Blvd in Collinwood. It goes out every day, with a couple longtime fisherman who know what everybody's catching and where it is, and they love it when their passengers are very successful. They also have poles for kids and people to teach them if they need it.

If everyone doesn't want to go fishing, there's a beautiful beach there, accessed by a walk over Euclid Creek and a wooded path, with bathrooms and easy steps down to a sandy beach, one of two right next to each other. This one is public, but no lifeguards. My mom and I prefer this one, easier to lay out a peaceful picnic lunch with no whistles in the background and my kids are all good swimmers now.

The next beach down, to your West, is "Euclid Beach" -- the beach that people played on when the amusement park was open. The big pier is still there and people like to scuba dive still to find things people dropped in the water back then-- coins, jewelry. (It closed in the sixties.) This one has life guards and is a lot more crowded and noisier, but a good place to meet people.

In the area where the Linda Mae goes out, there's a hotdog, pizza, cheese fries and root beer stand there, a picnic area and a park with swings and slides. (On a slight hill. This is also where everyone learns sledding and snowboarding around there in the winter.)

It's really fun.

And when you're done, head up the street to Sandy's, the frozen whip ice cream stand which is serving the frozen whip recipe from Euclid Beach! The real one, it's the best I've ever had. (I know the secret since almost everyone in the whole neighborhood worked there.) There are places there to sit, and an interesting gallery of photos in the indoor picnic space of people Mr. Sandy (His name is actually Lou, Sandy's is named after his wife) has met over the years. On Thursdays and Sundays there's a clown there who makes balloon animals and does face painting and for bigger kids-- teaches them line dances which everyone can join in if you feel brave or you can just watch from far flung picnic tables. (My favorite is the one by the mulberry tree which is in season right now and you can pick the berries and put them in your ice cream.)

Wow. I think I'm going over there today.

Get on the Shoreway, get off at E. 185th st, turn right, go down a couple streets, turn left
on Marcella and it will take you to Lakeshore Blvd. From there you'll see the entrance to the park to your left and Sandy's to your right.

We just some pretty cool submissions into the Collinwood Observer box--- which would be perfect to share right now.

This is the very fishing pier to which I was referring yesterday, when it was still part of Euclid Beach Amusement Park.
