Ohio Chautauqua to be held this week in Lakewood!

Post by Gary Rice »

Just a reminder to you all that the magnificent Ohio Chautauqua event, sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council, will be in Lakewood this week from the 22nd through the 26th. (Details in your Lakewood Observer paper, of course!)

There will be events for children and adults during the day at the library and at the Beck Center, and in the evenings- down at Lakewood Park under the big red and white striped tent.

The celebration commemorates both Lakewood's centennial as a city and the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. This year's presentations center around the Civil War.

Each evening at the park, a variety of music from our schools and individuals like myself will begin at 6 p.m., with a historical person being represented at 7 p.m., as a speaker.

I'll be planning on playing the banjo and saw for you at the Saturday and Sunday evening events.

Here's the link to the WJW Fox-8 video presentation by Lakewood Historical Society Executive Director Mazie Adams, and myself.

Hope to see all of you there!

Back to the banjo. (and the musical saw, of course!) :D

Thanks for posting Gary. I was just sitting down to get that same Fox 8 link posted to the Deck! And thanks again for helping represent the Ohio Chautauqua in Lakewood. (I'm on the OC Publicity Committee and our work was cut out for us).

Because of the Lakewood Historical Society and many supportive partners and donors, Lakewood is one of five Ohio towns chosen to host this traveling Ohio Humanities Council show. The only one in NE Ohio. About 2500 people are expected to come enjoy this week.

If you haven't, check out the Fox 8 link to see Gary in Civil War uniform and playing the saw while Mazie Adams of Lakewood Historical Society is interviewed about the event.

The big red and white tent is going up at Lakewood Park today! Jim, if you don't mind can you swing by there for a picture today or tomorrow and post here? I think they start putting up at 1pm today.

Youth programs at Beck everyday at 10am by 1 of the 5 scholars.
Brown bag lunch and Civil War movie at 12 noon at library
Adult programs at Lakewood Main Library by 1 of the 5 scholars.
At Lakewood Park 6pm music entertainment and 7 pm the live historic characterizations.
Full schedule in LO or at http://www.lakewoodhistory.org

Thanks for those great photos, Jim!

Dad and I just returned from Lakewood Park.

The tent's sides are on it, and the folding chairs are properly arranged and in place.

Remembering tent shows from my childhood, I have discovered that there is a very special atmosphere transpiring under a tent like this one- one that puts people into a totally different frame of mind. In my experience, tents tend to bring people together in a special way that is just magnificent.

Welcome to Ohio Chautauqua, Lakewood.

Tomorrow night's the first tent event starting at 6 p.m. and don't forget the daytime activities transpiring at Lakewood Library and the Beck Center, as well!

Better get back to practicing that banjo and saw. I expect that many of you will be in the audience when I get up to play. (My scheduled nights are Saturday and Sunday.) I certainly hope so. I'm planning on a couple of old-time sing-a-longs for you.
