Right on Red : How about just during school hours?

Post by Matthew Lee »

Just to get a bit of conversation away from the McDonald's discussion.....

:-)

Anyways, for the umpteenth time since moving here, we were driving to the airport today and realized, around Harding School, how many of the "No Right on Red" signs there were from 8 AM - 4 PM Mon - Fri with absolutely no regard if it was an actual school day or not.

There are a lot of these around Lakewood while many of our fellow communities are able to designate them as "School Days Only".

Just curious, because maybe it is just me, but it would be great if these signs were for School Days only, and not year round. It makes no sense, to me, to have them during the summer, etc. when no kids are present in the area.

Might be just whistling in the dark, but wanted to throw this out for discussion. Cheers!

How about "Only when the LPD are watching"?

Of course I am kidding, you have a good idea though...

My understanding is that it is okay to turn right on red as long as :
1. You have your left turn signal on while...
2. Stairway to Heaven blasts from your radio as...
3. You use only your left hand to control the radio dial and...
4. You ate Wheaties for breakfast.

I think there are some problems with you proposal.

First, I would venture that most people don't know when the schools are in session. People with no kids in school, which is most of us, have no idea if the schools is closed for a teachers' meeting, or for many holidays, or for weather.

Second, it is my experience that even during vacations and after hours, there are kids in and about the schools; the schoolyard is probably used by neighborhood kids more than the parks.

In fact, because so many kids congregate in the schoolyards when school is out, and even in the evening, I think it would make more sense to extend the turn-ban to 24/7. I think it is risky when the students going to the schoolyard have to change their pedestrian practices at exactly 1600; it would be simpler for them if there were more constancy.

In the alternative, I would propose that drivers be required to turn off their engines when they are immobilized by a light. Think of the gas that would save, and the pollution it would prevent.

Not to get off topic but I wouldnt mind if they increased the speed on Franklin to 45mph...that way everyone would go 35mph and I would be able to control my anger a little more while driving behind people who think no one is within 10 miles of them....

It feels as though that happens to me every time I take Franklin. You'd think I'd learn my lesson and not bother, but I keep hoping that I'll get to go 35 someday.
