Sometimes just throwing money at the issue is not the solution. Sometimes just “appearances” aren’t enough either to be sure kids will learn and have all they need to be successful beyond high school. Let’s stop spinning our wheels and move forward with some real solutions to our current and future challenges.

Amen sister. And thanks Sean for an articulate perspective of an educator here.

lakewoodcityschools.org wrote:The Board also at its meeting accepted the recommendation of the Administration to not adopt campus wear for the 2011-2012 school year. After having looked at the research findings on the advantages and disadvantages of campus wear dress codes, visiting schools who have adopted campus wear and developing estimates of the required costs of implementing campus wear, Superintendent P. Joseph Madak concluded in his recommendation to the board that:

“Given our current economy and what we have learned from this work, and given consultation with our middle school and high school principals, I recommend first, that we not pursue the implementation of a campus wear student dress code for the 2011-2012 school year and second, that we continue with our existing student dress code with the expectations that students are to follow it and that staff is to enforce it consistently and in its entirety.”

The Board unanimously accepted the Superintendent’s recommendation and reiterated Dr. Madak’s comment regarding strict and consistent enforcement of the current dress code.

The Board in August had adopted as one of its goals for the school year to look into the possibility of campus wear for the district. Satisfied by the research done by the Administration on all aspects of the campus wear issue, President Shaughnessy summed up the topic by commenting that “we all want to move on to put our time and energy into the important work of teaching and learning.”

The bold portion of the above quotation is not entirely accurate as no vote was taken and Board Member Linda Beebe was not present; however, all board members in attendance did verbally agree with Dr. Madak’s recommendation at the meeting.

what we need less of...is professionalism.
most people mistake professionalism with liberalism.
any teacher or adult has the authority to say:
"pull up your pants, kid."
"wear a longer skirt, missy".
no need to codify everything.
what we need less of...is professionalism.
