My favorite writer and the most important public thinker in American life is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the esophagus.
This is distressing. His famous lifestyle--booze and cigarettes--has not put him in a good position to defeat this difficult form of cancer. But everyone who should hope that Hitchens faces this challenge down with his trademark wit and stoicism. Whatever you think about him--and he certainly has detractors--I think he's done more to raise the level of debate in this country about vital public matters than anyone else on the scene.
Get well quick, Hitch!
