Saturday Morning Vandalism

This past Saturday morning after 2:00am one or more people walking south on
Riverside Dr. newly planted trees were pulled out of the tree lawn and destroyed.




When they could not remove the tree, they twisted and broke them off.




Then threw them into the Emerald Canyon...



Lakewood Police are looking for leads in this crime against the city.

Everyone –

This is just terrible. Here we have a family investing serious money into a home on Riverside just to have the yard vandalized repeatedly. (This is not the first time.)

Am I to believe that nobody drove down this road without noticing one or more people literally tearing out trees and throwing them over the retaining wall into the canyon?

I, for one, have been guilty of not reporting what I consider small things to the police. In fact, my car was rummaged through a couple of weeks ago while parked in my driveway and I failed to call the police immediately. It was only after I spoke with our block watch captain that I called.

No more. From now on, I am calling on anything that raises my eyebrows.

I cannot and we cannot just sit back and accept that these things happen. We must all be more vigilant in standing up for the values we wish to see in our community.

And this is the crux of the issue.

If we do not get involved the city goes to hell, and the idiots win.

Like it or not, we are in a war. If we get tough, we can go back to fun, and not worrying.

If we stand idly by, it will consume the city.

After pouring good money into a wonderful home she said to me, "This is the last straw,
I am sick of nothing being done. We are moving."

Without knowing anyone involved, this seems to be more of a specific, targeted type of crime, or an act of rage, rather than a random act of vandalism. Is that the thinking? Someone put a lot of energy into this, on a street where late-night pedestrian traffic doesn't seem particularly frequent.

Just wondering, it seems like a curious incident.

Well I agree and this couldn't have been done very quietly. Were the people who lived in that house not home nor any of the neighbors right next door?

They were home, as were both neighbors. I am one. I cannot speak for them but we had our
windows open and heard nothing.

When this happened last time it was some drunks walking down Riverside around 2 am, and they
got very loud when the tree in front of our house would not come out, and destroyed it. That was
maybe 5 years ago.

One of the many issues could be that there is really no dirt to speak of in our tree lawns. Mostly sand and loose fill with a think layer of dirt on the top. So that newly planted trees like the
first two come out pretty easy.

This would be the third time they have had problems with people destroying their gardens as
people walk by. I cannot imagine anyone made at this family. Really good people.

This happened last night on my street. I live on one of the streets that run between Detroit and Sloane. Took my daughter for a wagon ride this morning and saw a small tree snapped off at the base laying in a front yard. When I got around the block and was on Sloane, someone had pulled a metal "for rent" sign out of yard and had set it on the hood of a new car that was parked on the street.

These incidents aren't far from the other ones reported on here (within walking distance) and happened on a Friday night into Saturday morning as well. I will be alerting all my neighbors to keep an eye out.

Any other ideas welcome.
