NEWS RELEASE


The Lakewood Police Department is currently investigating a shooting that occurred at 1437 Newman Ave. on May 24, 2010, at 0008hrs. The Lakewood Police Department received a report of gunshots in the parking lot and upon arrival found one male on the ground with gunshot wounds. This male was transported to Metro Hospital. Investigation into the incident reveals this possibly may have been an attempted robbery. The suspected robber had produced a firearm while committing the robbery, the victim of the robbery produced his own handgun and shot the robber. The victim of the robbery, a 35yr old male from Charlotte North Carolina, was taken into custody by Lakewood Police. Two handguns were recovered at the scene. No charges have been filed. Pending the outcome of the investigation the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office will be consulted for determination of any criminal charges.

The Lakewood Police Department has been unable to secure an identification of the suspect at Metro Hospital.

The suspect is a Black Male, 18-20yrs old, approx. 6’00”, 170lbs, with two tattoos, one of a spider on the right shoulder and JULY on the left chest.

As of 3:00PM the Lakewood Police Department has made a tentative identification of the male at Metro Hospital, pending confirmation and notification to family members.

In regards to the incident at 1437 Newman Ave, Lakewood, on 5/24/2010;

The male who was shot has been identified as Nathaniel D. Taylor, 18, of 9913 North Ave. Cleveland. He is still at Metro Hospital.

The male taken into custody is identified as Leon G. Choo-Hurt, 35, of 9233 Glenwater Dr. Charlotte, North Carolina.

After consultation with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office Choo-Hurt has been released pending further investigation.

Investigation to this point indicates Taylor was attempting to rob Choo-Hurt with the use of a firearm. Choo-Hurt produced his own firearm and shot Taylor. The investigation is continuing.
