Man with Dead Body in Car Picked up in Lakewood

Parma man found driving a car with a dead body in back seat

PARMA, Ohio -- Police have a 60-year-old man in custody this morning after he was found driving in Lakewood with a dead body in the back seat.

Parma Sgt. Marty Compton said the body has not yet been identified, but could be a 60-year-old Parma woman who lived with the man.

Compton said a woman called police about 9 p.m. Tuesday and said she was worried because she had not seen her mother since before Christmas. Police interviewed the woman and learned that she was living with a man on Knollwood Road. The daughter said she was concerned because her mother had recently undergone open heart surgery.

Police said they learned that the man was often in an area of Lakewood, so they contacted Lakewood police and asked them to watch for the man and contact them if they located him.

"Around midnight, Lakewood police stopped the man on West 117th Street and Edgewater Drive," said Compton. "Our officers went to the scene. Our officers asked the man what he could tell us about the missing woman. He said, 'She's in the back seat.' And there was a body wrapped in a blanket under boxes in the back seat."

Police put the vehicle on a flatbed and took everything to the Cuyahoga County coroner's office.

The man was taken into custody.

"We have not yet heard from the coroner's office about the identification of the body, we're not even sure if it's a woman," said Compton.

Until identification is made, police will not release the name of the woman or the man in custody.
