The health care legislation about to be passed by the U.S. Senate requires all Americans to purchase health insurance. All Americans, that is, except for the Senate, other members of Congress and their staff. The Democrats refuse to even allow vote on the matter.
Iowa senator Chuck Grassley tried to introduce an amendment to the bill that would require all members of Congress and congressional staff to get their employer-based health insurance through the same exchanges that would be created for the rest of the nation. Grassley asked for unanimous consent to allow his amendment to be offered, and was denied.
“Careful examination by the Congressional Research Service of the bill that Senator Reid brought to the floor revealed that one of the things that happened behind closed doors was that leadership and committee staff ended up being carved out from having to live under the new health care exchanges that this legislation would create and impose on the rest of the country,” Grassley said. “This creates a double standard that’s inexcusable.”
