Ohio Regional Sewer District To Raise Lakewood Property Taxe

Post by Bill Call »

The Plain Dealer reports that a move is a foot to increase Lakewood’s property taxes to fund sewer projects for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District:

The relevant quote:

“A lawyer who represents businesses and shopping centers against the plan says the sewer district does not have the authority to create the fee. Sheldon Berns said that to get the authority, the district would have to get the court to amend the original judgment that created the sewer board.

"My own view is that this is the reason we have elected officials," he said.
Berns added that communities might be more receptive to the new county council, which takes office in 2011, enacting a property tax increase that ensures all the suburbs -- including those note in the sewer district, like Lakewood, Rocky River, Bay Village and Euclid -- would be included. “

It seems that all that building in Brecksville and North Royalton and Strongsville has caused flooding problems and degradation of streams and rivers. The people who live in those areas think it unfair that they have to pay to fix the problem. After all isn’t this a regional issue?

Where does our Mayor stand on this issue?

I suspected that all this talk of reform was just subterfuge for regionalization. The Plain Dealer accepted cronyism and corruption in the County for years before they found they could use it as a vehicle for regionalization. This is just a sample of what is in store for us.

2010 is going to be an interesting year.
