I have not met personally with the Obama Auto Task Force. The comments related to the "laws of physics" came from a discussion I had a number of years ago with several Congressmen who said that we should pass a new 2nd law of thermodynamics

we'd have cars getting at least 50 mpg on gasoline today. Maybe 80 mpg.
Since the beginning of the automobile the weight of research and design has been on increasing horsepower and acceleration. from leaded gasoline to the glory days of 8 cylinder caddies and buicks, most commercial and consumer attention has been toward acceleration and speed.
There's no real reason civilian street-legal cars need to go faster than 55 miles per hour, or get to 55 in less than 20 seconds. just design the engines and drive trains for slower speeds and slower acceleration. We could have cars basically as large and useful as todays cars, enjoying all the benefits our civilization gets from them, with much greater mileage. But the truth is, the baboon instincts take over in the automobile. acceleration is the drug of choice, and the drug with the highest casualty rates. call in the DEA.
Aren't you always complaining about greedy big-business?? They'd probably sell their own grandmother to make a profit the way you talk.
The last time I checked, there was this thing...I think its called the free market...and if what you suggest was profitable (more money for those greedy car company executives), don't you think the car companies would have done it?
Wait, you also specifically mentioned "civilian" cars. Does that mean the big, bad military, and "The Man" at the police station get to have faster vehicles? Why do you hate black people so much? All those racist cops and redneck military grunts are going to do is hunt down the poor black people in their slower civilian cars.
Why 55 MPH? I know how you hate urban sprawl and the highways that caused it. Handicap all cars at 35 MPH. If commuters can't get from the suburbs to the job in city so fast, they will have to move closer to the city. The inner ring suburbs and inner cities will be revitalized. All those black people will be gone after the cops get them, there will be lots of room!
Note: Post is oozing with sarcasm. No, I don't really think the police hate black people and I don't think black people need to be hunted down or removed from their homes.
Hello Roy. The toxic effects of tetra-ethyl were well documented. It was even studied or used as a potential biological weapon during World War 1. GM lobbied heavily to get leaded gasoline accepted by the feds and the surgeon general. one of their arguments was that it was necessary to industrial growth and fuel economy. They then turned right around and invested this increased Octane in speed and acceleration. They did not invest increases in Octane in Mileage. The U.S. was energy independent at that time.
When other firms found alternative additives to increase octane of gasoline, GM, lobbied and maneuvered to keep tetra-ethyl. I am not against big business or small business. I am against any business doing things that are blatantly wrong or bad.
The history of the U.S. auto industry, from the 30s onward, was to decrease the longevity of automobiles by making cosmetic and minor structural changes every year. Fashion being what it is, a dignified man had to invest in newer faster or flashier models. not more reliable and durable models.
The Republicans and the Democrats are occasionally on about reducing "energy dependence". I merely want them to be realistic about that. I enjoy the utility of motor vehicles as much as the next guy. 50 mph is a lot damn faster than a horse or a pair of shoes or a bicycle. it is enough. Do you want to increase energy independence? I am interested in policies and practices to increase energy independence.
I never mentioned anything about speeding blacks. why are you preoccupied with speeding blacks? the majority of my experience with speeders is that they are white speeders. I guess that makes them crackers, hillbillies, greasers, hosers, or teenage animals.
About 40,000 Americans die in car accidents a year. many more are severely injured. a majority of police man-hours are spent regulating automobile traffic and responding to accidents. this is a great civic expense. they even call out a fire truck loaded with fireman for minor car accidents. that's a lot of budget. I just want lower taxes.
