The rumor is
1:00am gun shots heard. Police responded, found blood, nothing else. Shortly
there after a call came in from Lakewood Hospital that a young male, had come in with
a gunshot wound to the head, but that the bullet had passed through causing no serious
damage. The police spoke with him and he said three black youths had pulled the trigger.
He was released and went home to Cleveland.
Still looking for the trigger men.
Waiting for releases from Lakewood Police, City Hall, and Ward 2 Councilman Bullock.

It would appear that most of this rumor is true. After speaking with some police
officials, most of this was confirmed.

However it would seem that the Mayor did not think it should be talked about.
I found this odd, as the gunmen have not be arrested, and would thought that the safety
of the residents might have been numero uno on the mayor's thoughts and concerns. Also
he did run on getting rid of crime, in the UNSAFE Lakewood of two years ago.
Of course, this is an ongoing investigation as no one has been caught, so maybe he did not
want to hinder the hard work of the police with people coming forward with things they saw. Or maybe, just maybe, he just was hoping it didn't happen, which we all do.
This is part of a very troubling new attitude with public officials that think Lakewoodites
just do not need to know the bad news, only the good stuff, dished up through propaganda
devices like newsletter$$, email blast$$, and facebook!
Each to their own.
No matter, this is the way it played out.

Re: shooting?
Cleveland.com had this news on its Website shortly after noon on Friday, followed by some 30 comments. Since then I have seen news of it on at least 2 other Lakewood sites. That doesn't sound like news nobody is talking or has heard about.

Yeah, I read this on Cleveland.com Friday, too, police quotes and all.

We tried to hold back on the rumor as this is the sort of thing that can cause half of a city
to flee in the middle of the night. Of course that would be nearly impossible in Lakewood
as you can't sell a house at a decent price anyway.
What we had hoped for was information descriptions, and maybe some form of comment from
two of the three politicians that had campaigned on stopping crime. One refused comment
the other came out with a very solid comment that was designed to calm.
From today's printed Lakewood Observer...
According to Chief Malley, the Lakewood Police Department has been working closely with their detectives ever since the call was received at 1:00 a.m. Saturday. The little that has been released includes the location of the incident, at the corner of Elmwood and Madison and an initial description of the three suspects as follows: 16-21 years old, between 5’ 6’’ – 5’ 9’’ tall, and African-American.
Although there are leads being actively pursued, the details of the shooting are still unclear. What information has been gleaned from the investigation so far strongly suggests that this occurrence was not a random was not a random act of violence.
When asked about this weekend’s shooting, Ward 2 Councilman Tom Bullock said, “This is an isolated incident, but one that I take very seriously. I've spoken with the police, who are investigating the circumstances, and I'll be sure to coordinate with our Block Clubs to address this appropriately.”
The Mayor's Office declined to comment on the incident during these early stages of the ongoing investigation.
The Lakewood Police Department is asking anyone with additional information surrounding the incident to please come forward. All reports are greatly appreciated and can be made by contacting the Police Department at their non-emergency phone number, (216) 521-6773.
The very real thing in the report is that it would not seem to be an act of random violence.
Which is good thing for the residents to hear. At least we do not have roving gangs committing
gangland style assassinations.
The Lakewood Observer just asked all of the council candidates what was the
biggest problems/issues that made them want to run? ALL OF THEM said safety.
FWIW

Random act of violence or not this happen 2 blocks from my house in an area where there are people out walking around at 1 am as we have several nice bars in the area and the fact it may or may not have been a random act doesn't change the fact it was too close to home for me.

I agree, who cares why, close is close. Are there any updates?

A little birdie told me it was a drug deal gone bad. And once again I'll say that that is also too close to home. I don't like knowing drugs are being dealt around here.

So am I supposed to feel safer that we have gangs of black youths shooting customers that come into Lakewood to buy their drugs? My god, what has happened to this city? I noticed that everyone running for council, thinks it is unsafe too. Some think it is worse than it was two years ago.

Re: shooting?
I see deals go down, car to car and person walking to kid on a bike right in the parking lot here, almost everyday.
Today I saw a person walking and a young man on one of those dealer bikes (with the small wheels). I then saw the two of them walking together and apart on Madison, Rocky River Dr. and then going back where ever they came from through my parking lot.
Mind you, I saw these two at different times, on my way to and from my Doctor's appointment.
Just another day.

I was "flagged" on W.117th. Thank goodness it wasn't Highland Avenue.

Did you write down plate numbers, descriptions, or report it to police? Every action taken against these acts are good actions (safety first, of course).sharon kinsella wrote:I see deals go down, car to car and person walking to kid on a bike right in the parking lot here, almost everyday.
I see Lakewood Police around quite a bit and though they are trying to make a difference it if definately a community encompassing job.

Am I missing something here? A young man gets gun down by three local hoodlums, and there are no real serious police inquiries, no wanted information, nothing from City Hall but silence, and people think it is some sort of joke? Two young women beating up badly at a Convenient store in my neighborhood 6 months ago, the women have never heard anything more from the detectives. Every candidate running for council thinks City Hall and the mayor has failed, and that crime is out of control, and it is some how funny?
