Awards?

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Some of this goes back to the last Planning Director Tom Jordan, who
one day called me up to tell me what a great "honor" and "award" had
been bestowed on my favorite city of Lakewood.

"Jim, I have a great scoop for the paper! said Tom all excited. "What is
that?" I answered.

"Lakewood was just awarded..."

Over the course of the next ten minutes I found out that Lakewood paid
$$$$$$ to even be considered, and guaranteed more $$$$$$ yearly to
the group bestowing the award on Lakewood forever.

At that point I said, "Tom, if you pay to be considered, and you pay yearly
to sustain. Isn't that like walking into a trophy shop and buying the "award""?

The only reason I mention this is that it would seem like it could be award
season again in Lakewood. Could this be the year I win publisher of the year
from the Lakewood Observer?

Oh to dream...

Stay tuned.

Yeah I know we hate this cryptic stuff.

Jim how much did it cost you, or did you have to sustain, to be Publisher of the Year or Businessman of the Year or Best Grateful Dead Fan of the Year or Best Large Man in a Small Car of the Year or Best Man at Receiving Best of Awards of the Year?

Sorry, I just fell off the edge of my keyboard and smacked my jaw on it.

Thanks a lot, Jim.

For the record.

Never been a big dead head or fan.

Besides, that is not the Lakewood way. The Lakewood way would be in your case
The Jordan Foundation, giving Rozi's Best Business of the Year Award.

For me, I believe that this week, The Lakewood Motoring Society will be giving the
Lakewood Observer award for best support of a minority car ownership award.

Next week I am hoping for a MAMA award for best business not on Madison, but
near enough to get rain water run-off.

See you have to started the group or be a member of the group, and then have
that person give you an award so that you get some mention in the PD, so that
you can feel better about yourself even though you gave the award to yourself.

It is very tricky, only one group has really mastered it in all of DowntowN.

It is actually even better if you had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, then you get extra
satisfaction, and bonus points around "the club."

Are you speaking of the "Critical Thought Award" that was presented to me
by my company AGS?

Yes it this town, I guess you might be right.

But I have high hopes!

Ok Gary, how about a sing along...

Next time your found, with your chin on the ground
There a lot to be learned, so look around

Just what makes that little old ant
Think hell move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, cant
Move a rubber tree plant

But hes got high hopes, hes got high hopes
Hes got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your gettin low
stead of lettin go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant

When troubles call, and your backs to the wall
There a lot to be learned, that wall could fall

Once there was a silly old ram
Thought hed punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin that dam

cause he had high hopes, he had high hopes
He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your feelin bad
stead of feelin sad
Just remember that ram
Oops there goes a billion kilowatt dam

All problems just a toy balloon
Theyll be bursted soon
Theyre just bound to go pop
Oops there goes another problem kerplop

So, if I am secretly deeply involved in a group that is desperately trying to get $$$$$$
to manage a fund designed to help minorities and disadvantaged people, though they
have ZERO background in that and have actually been on record telling some we could
get wealthier people to move into that property after it is grabbed.

Go to my day job and arrange an award to my secret group for helping minorities.

Is that winning an award?

Just trying to understand how this award thing works.

What if you’re involved in an organization (secretly or not) that gives and gives to the community and other organizations. One of the other organizations is so demanding of your organization and you continue to give and give yet there is no reciprocation. They “demand” monetary support from your organization and at the same time doesn’t want to pay for or otherwise acknowledge the support your organization shows them. It’s basically a one way street.

Should you give your organization an award for all the things they do for the community and other local groups? Or should you wait for the other group to see the light?

Charley

Good points, I think.

This is one reason we have been working with Case, and Kent on a new innovative
Co-op model for our projects around the state.

From the bottom of my heart, I do not understand awards. I have won many
and I am sure they are somewhere. But not really sure of any real impact
except for losing the time going to the damn ceremony, when I go.

Start putting out press releases to "Proudly announce". Do it a couple of times then go spend your money on groups that are actually functioning ethically.
