Backyard trash pick-up. Should this continue?

Finally got ours today. The plastic bag with info was just tied around the can, so no screwdriver needed to remove it. Had no problem whatsoever moving it. Probably will end up downsizing, though, as you can barely fit it through our gate or along the sidewalk in the back yard...

Just found one problem - my dog is scared to death of it and wouldn't even come outside with it near the door! Funniest thing I've seen today...

Are you really able to get a smaller can? Honestly with the old cans, we barely filled up one 1/2 way each week, the new can is just overkill size.

I believe that I saw a post on another Lakewood-ish forum that stated that smaller cans would be available June 1.

Smaller cans would be nice, because we have to back out both of our cars in the driveway just to get the can from the back yard to the front lawn.


If the world would still see in black and white, we would be praising these cans as masterpieces. Look how lovely they look, they add a nice touch of "Oh yeah.....I'm in Lakewood." to the area.


In all honesty, I just hope the city didn't hire a firm outside the city to think of a clever, new slogan.

Just noticed this commentary below one of our "Art of Recycling" recycle bins.

"Once the city allows tagging, everyone gets involved."

At the risk of sounding overly defensive, I'll just say "ouch" and I hope our artist doesn't see the commentary, because it is unfair and inappropriate. (Jim O. to Mary: "Who says life is fair, Mary?"; Mary back to Jim: "Does that mean we shouldn't try?")

As for me, I will do my best to continue launching projects that may not be perfect, but fit in with the model of action speaking louder than words.

I'm loving the new wheely bins after just a few weeks. Four reasons:
1. I'm lazy. One trip to the curb is all it takes. If only we had similar bins for recycling (like Lyndhurst). Of course we've always taken trash to curb to keep the silly carts out of our driveway and off the sidewalks.
2. The thing rolls surprisingly well around cars and over irregular ground and wood chips.
3. It's like having my own mini-dumpster. I no longer have to carefully bag everything so the garbage guys can haul it out of the cans easily by hand. As I said, I'm lazy.
4. Less trash picking. As much as I'm for someone reusing what we no longer need, and can't get rid of on Craig's List or Freecycle, they inevitably leave a mess that I have to pick up. This week I watched someone in a beat-up van cruise slowly down our street on garbage night and noticed that there was very little visible trash to cannibalize.

That's my two cents. Interesting how much "controversy" a little change can generate.
I'll be curious to see how the bins hold up and how much money the city actually saves.

I love walking out to my new dumpster after cleaning up the dogs and dinner and finding a racoon in it eating my garbage. Yeah that is a blast!!! My old lids locked, these ones dont and I got the pleasure of meeting Mr. Raccoon last night. WHOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! He was pleasant enough and didnt attack me, but I think my lab is to thank for that. Now there is a brick on my lid to keep unwanted creatures out. (on a side note, I lived in the country on a farm and I have had more wildlife here in the city. LOL...)

Hey Missy,

I was just wondering how things are going with the new dumpster, besides the problem with your little raccoon friend. I know in the past you said you didn’t think you would be able to fit all your garbage in it. Is there enough room, or do you still need to use extra cans? Just curious.

My house will be very customer friendly for the garage sale. Well more of a yard sale than garage sale. We are going to have large tents, lots of tables and lots of good stuff. Many antiques, a few (ok 2) comic books Gentle Ben and Paul Bunyon. I am getting more donations this week from various neighbors and friends. I promise to not have any crazy dogs outside and my yard will be "clean"...LOL.

My youngest is going to have a lemonade/iced tea stand too. (he is 4 and this is all he wants to do ...cute kid) We will be having this June 26th and June 27th. Starting at 9am and lasting till around 2-3 pm.

I did have to purchase an extra can. I found myself filling the one ever since I got it.

I think it was just a fluke that I had the one raccoon, but I have seen them around. Right when we moved in here, we had one in our attic, along with some mice, a few chipmunks and squirrels.

I have had no issues with the new bins or process of putting them on the curb. I barely fill it up on a weekly basis, but that doesn't bug me at all.
