I have ranted here alot about torture at Gitmo and elsewhere in the war on terror.
So why am I not as pissed off about domestic wiretapping?
1) I think privacy doesnt exist anymore anyway; anyone can find out anything about anybody if they try hard enough
2) wiretapping probably produces real usable intelligence actually related to terrorist crimes or potential crimes, as opposed to torture which produces forced, dubious intelligence or outright lies
3) point one notwithstanding, I dont really think the government is paying much attention to me; they're monitoring real suspects

Mark,

The problem here is with the precedent it sets. The telcos violated the law by not obtaining warrants to spy on citizens. Now because they are facing lawsuits that could total billions of dollars in damages they are trying to cover their butts, using the american legislative system to do it. It is a disgrace to the rule of law that we claim is important enough to go gallivanting around the globe to spread. It is a true shame and a slam at the american people.

It is also very easy to give up your rights, it is nearly imposable to get them back once they are gone.

Kind of like over-taxation and welfare entitlements. The genie is out of the bottle on all of the above.
