Iraq insurgency: People rise against al-Qa'eda

Iraqis rise up (clicky)

Mr Kareem and other Husaybah residents claim that the peace that followed the expulsion of al-Qa'eda has triggered an economic revival and restoration of favourite pastimes. Ghanim Mirdie Waleed, coach of the local football team, who celebrated a recent victory with cigarettes, paid tribute to the American role in Husaybah.

"The conflict here was all caused by al-Qa'eda," he said. "We work and play as we like under the coalition security. There are jobs for people, shops are opened and we are very happy."

With al-Qa'eda pushed out, Anbaris are even rallying to a new shared cause with America - a fight to secure the country against Iranian infiltration.

I hope that this is the beginning of a positive trend.

Stephen:

There are a lot of people out their who FEAR it is a trend. They want the United States to lose, they want al Qa'eda to win they dream of a blood drenched American defeat.

While you and I see signs of a peaceful and democratic Iraq as a positive sign many on the left see it as reason for despair.

"Among groups, Democrats (80 percent) and Republicans (76 percent) are about equally likely to say they have prayed for the war to end, and women (80 percent) are only slightly more likely than men (73 percent) to have done so."

From the same Fox story. Doesn't seem to indicate that FEAR is present?

Pointless name calling - If I recall Bill, you once deemed me to be a "denier" - and references to a "dream of a blood drenched American defeat" are inflammatory and hardly a precursor to a reasonable discussion.

Still, if you want to vent - I guess that this is as good a place as anywhere.

Any other hyperbole you'd like to add?

But the disclosure from ABC and later other news organizations tipped off Qaeda's internal security division that the organization's Internet communications system, known among American intelligence analysts as Obelisk, was compromised. This network of Web sites serves not only as the distribution system for the videos produced by Al Qaeda's production company, As-Sahab, but also as the equivalent of a corporate intranet, dealing with such mundane matters as expense reporting and clerical memos to mid- and lower-level Qaeda operatives throughout the world.

By midafternoon, several television news networks reported obtaining copies of the transcript. A copy posted around 3 p.m. on Fox News's Web site referred to SITE and included page markers identical to those used by the group. "This confirms that the U.S. government was responsible for the leak of this document," Katz wrote in an e-mail to Leiter at 5 p.m.
