Torture is very sad. They say torture will eventually lead the prisoner to telling you whatever he thinks you want to hear.
It is hard to crack a jihadist extremist. They have strong emotions backing their convictions. Bill Maher suggested it is because they grow up not being able to talk to chicks most of the time. Thomas Friedman says it is because they don't get to go to McDonalds and DisneyWorld and Wal-Mart and stuff.
Are they prisoners of War? In past wars of territorial gain or defense, the prisoners are mostly released soon after the war or even before it is over. And these guys are mostly small timers. they aren't big shots like Cobra Commander or Jefferson Davis or Himmler or Rudolph Hess or Shiro Ishii. U.S. forces put up bounties and anyone can get turned in.
So, there may be better ways than physical torture. The drug propranolol has been shown to dissolve intense negative emotions tied to memories. You could give the detainees this and then get them wound up about whatever the basis of their anti-west beliefs are. Then just give them a lot of marijuana or hash the next week. show them good movies like abbot and costello or those ones with the chimps and orangutans dressed like humans. They'll see their guards as friends and just start talking casually about whatever they know.
if that isn't enough there can be field trips to Target. In nearly ever Target store in the suburbs, it is like heaven for the cargo cultists. Everyone there is good looking and well dressed. They speak well and are polite. They may as well be virgins, because you aren't going to have sex with any of them. It is like Heaven. Show the Jihadists Heaven. Assimilate them into the american cargo cult while it is going large.
