While it is about the United Kingdom, it provides and interesting look at oil problems around the world.

Thanks for the website Jim, I bookmarked it.
My son and I saw the movie "Peak Oil" at the Cleveland Film Festival this year. We knew that oil reserves were depleting and the need for sustainable energy resources. We just didn't realize how deep our dependence was. The movie even sparked a long conversation, once again, on whether or not he should have children.
With all the available technology for alternative energy, I would hope that resources will be made available for further exploration. Our current dependence is insane.

..
It appears to me one of the many idiotic sides regarding our politicians running for president from any party is the lack of a solid plan to reduce our dependency on mideast oil at all.
The automakers keep churning out the gas hogs, the american buyers are still buying the gas hogs and only a minority of our citizenship are left talking about alternative fuels, but which candidates are standing up and talking about a plan to do anything about our fuel problems?
I once posted "what would our population do if our access to mideast oil were to be cut in the next 36 hours?".

great
Mr.Kunstler's articles of this week and last week were especially coherent.
We need to be talking about alternative living arrangements more urgently than alternative fuels. This means our economic policies. That means trade, agriculture, labor, What kind of residential and retail development we subsidize most with giant tax breaks and subsidies, education, and how the most vital civic infrastructures are organized.
It probably means abandoning all pretenses of "saving the world" by making it more like what America is today. Whether that involves saving them from Communism, Socialism, secular dictatorships, religious extremist parliamentary governments, having 1 billion more people than they need, etc, saving them from small independent and inefficient non-corporate merchandisers, shitty cell phone service, etc.
Basically, the whole Iraq war has been for most of the suburban construction of the last 20 years or 40 years, and virtually all of southern california and las vegas. Unfortunately the patriotism hasn't convinced God to generate more oil under the Middle East, Mexico, or even Texas. Nor has it really done much to increase the value of the dollar per commodity unit of oil. But for now Japan and China will continue regurgitating their massive trade deficits with us into financing our deficits recently ballooned by trying to convert Iraq into a series of Middle East military bases.
For example, do we really need mail six days a week? Only 3 days a week would seem just as good. (I do not hate Postal workers, or their union).

yeah
So, it became clearer after September 11th that our allies in the Middle East are very conservative, overpopulated, and bordering on civil war or revolutions. Saudi Arabia. Jordan. the United Arab Emirates. All the other places the September 11th terrorists were from and largely bankrolled from.
How do you keep the oil merchants we're used to dealing with in power? How do you keep the oil pumping infrastructure safe?
Those places are very conservative, so you can't built enormous military bases in them without feeding the fire. But Iraq was a relatively moderate place, as far as the general population went. At least it was back then. It looks like a better place to secure easements for enormous military bases. But first ya gotta change the landlord.
