Colleen Wing-Ward 3 Council

Post by Colleen Wing »

I have always been politically active at some level, but once I became a parent it became more of a civic duty as a good steward of the community. I firmly believe as parents we are taught that if we nurture the bodies, minds, and spirits of our children, that we have done our best. But the truth is that no matter how much we positively contribute in our homes to all these factors, eventually we have to send our kids out into the world. I feel it is the responsibility of all member of society to protect the interests and values that they hold dear. To stay engaged at some level helps create a balance that makes communities like Lakewood such a great place to live. Although it may not be our collective venue of choice, politics and government are two of the common thread that bond us as a community.

I have been attending City Council meetings regularly for the past 6 years, and have missed very few over the past 3 years. After riding the rollercoaster of such issues as the West Nile Spraying, The West End Project, The Streets Plan(s), Income tax increase, The Grow Lakewood Report, CitiStat and countless others, I have witnessed two Mayors, three Ward 1 councilman, and a few other elected officials come and go. During 2005, I sat through over 40 hours of budget hearings-while pregnant- and countless other special/committee meetings when, at times, was the only member of the public present. It got to the point during the middle of the budget hearings that one of the Councilmen asked me for which of the newspapers I worked.

I was born and raised in Elyria, attended The Ohio State University, after marriage lived in Marietta, and the Detroit area, before choosing Lakewood as home six years ago. I am a 1989 graduate of Elyria Catholic High School and hold an Associates of Science in Hospitality Management from Columbus State C.C.

Prior to raising children, I was employed for 12 years in the Hospitality Industry with all levels of experience including as a Restaurant General Manager. I have maintained a staff of up to 120 employees. I was responsible for assessing the productivity and costs of failing locations and was given 30 days to successfully implement a finance and employee management plan.

I served on the Citizens Advisory Committee for Community Block Grants in 2006.

I am an active member of St. Luke Parish, where I serve on Parish Council. I am also a member of Lakewood Early Childhood PTA, Bylaws and Legislation Committee Chairs. Eric and I have been married for 12 years and have two sons, Benjamin (8) and Nathan (2). We reside on Bunts Road.
