Televised public meetings

Post by Danielle Masters »

Suzanne brought it up in another thread but I thought we could have a new thread devoted just to this idea. Why aren't council and other community meetings televised? I attend as many meetings as possible, but still there are some I just can't make it to. I have lived in other cities where council meetings were televised and I thought it was great. Televising meetings would open them up to the whole community and not just the people able to get out. Sharon brought up a point that she is ill and is not always able to get out. It would be wonderful if people in that position were able to "sit in" on these meetings without having to rely on second hand observations. I know many people that work or having other commitments. I am sure that some of the Board of Education members would like to be able to see the council meetings they couldn't attend and vice versa.

I know that this topic has been brought up before but it's time to revisit it. I think its time that we give as many citizens as possible access to public meetings. Any thoughts?

Oh yes, I especially wish the "council coup" meeting could have been taped and posted!

Can the LO Deck host some video content, ala Youtube (or heck, even post on Youtube and simply link it here)? If college kids can wire up their homes for a virtual "Real World" 24/7, one would think it would be pretty easy for the City to do so. This is a good idea, Danielle. Nothing holds people more accountable than a camera.

LakewoodAlive has been looking for a reliable videographer to tape Council meetings since the beginning of the year. We would be willing to pay for this service for a period of time. We need a set-up that will tie into the sound system and a person who can make a commitment to attending the meetings. We have had several leads, but none have panned out. Let me know if you are aware of someone who will do this.

I am heading out of town and will be unavailable to respond for almost 2 weeks, but feel free to leave a message for me to get when I get home. My direct email is macrampton@ameritech.net

This assumes that the City would give us permission to tape....I'm sure that would not be a problem. Ultimately it would be our hope that the City could provide this service.

Mary Anne,

You don't need permission. It is a public meeting. Tape away!

Why isn't this part of the service from Cox Cable? When I lived in Euclid, the local cable provider (I think it was Adelphia before they went bankrupt) televised all city council meetings over a community channel. They provided the camera and the cameraman as part of their contract with the community.

Yes....that would be great and as a supplement to the services ("B"loop) that they provide.

I suggest that we ask Cox to proceed AT LIGHT SPEED. I'm sure they will be very responsive

Yes you can, various different ways.

One is using the imag link to content posted elsewhere.

Or in the "image" dump through photo blogs.
