I think we should be selling/giving assistance to democracies like Israel. When I see us giving weapons to non-democracies for whatever realpolitik reasons, I always get a queasy feeling, to be honest.

We give more aid to Israel per capita than any other place in the world. They are essentially there to field test our weapons by proxy. But they don't have oil! We gotsta have the oil!

But we gotsta have the discount retail merchandise! Which means...India and China will be able to offer more in trade for oil than we will.
