The sun last week in all of its glory. You need solar filters and expensive lens to get this photo, but it is not what you really want. Note sunspots on right side.
This coming Monday, weather permitting Lakewoodites will get to see a total eclipse of the sun. A once in a lifetime opportunity. A light show in space that brought civilizations to standstills, and allowed educated people to trick those less educated. A celestial show/ illusion.

If there is a light cloud cover like the Partial Eclipse 2017, you can still see the eclipse. You still need to protect your eyes.
The moon moved in front of the sun, and because the size and stance of the moon, it blocks out the sun perfectly. This allows the corona, and flares to be seen for a short period by the naked eye.During this very brief moment, what was once in bright sunlight turns dark.

The partial eclipse in 2014 was without cloud cover.
The best way to view the eclipse is go somewhere that has a clear view of the western afternoon sky at 3pm. Grab a chair and sit down with Eclipse Glasses, that are available all over for as little as $1.50. Do yourself a fav or and get a couple pairs, see below.
Now is you want to photograph the eclipse, use caution. Never look directly at the sun for more than a couple seconds if at all. The same is true for most digital cameras and camera phones. The photo cells are sensitive and can be burned out with long exposure.
If you are using a digital camera, get a tripod, purchase a solar filter, and practice. With a little practice you can focus the camera, and get a good exposure. A proper exposure short show sunspots, clearly in focused. Even in a light sunspot phase there are always one or two to focus on.
Then set up and let the magic happen. Generally a photo every 5 minutes will catch the progression to the Diamond Ring. This is when only a slice of the sun can be seen.

Using an old iphone, not risking the new one, here with half a pair of eclipse glasses taped in place as a filter. Ann easy fast safe way to photograph the eclipse. Lens covered before and after totality.

During totality fold back during totality. Don't forget to take pictures of friends and family watching the eclipse. Those are the photos you will love.

iphone photo with solar glass filter.
You can now remove your filters, and glasses and in Cleveland this time see nearly 4 minutes of totality.
As soon as the diamond appears on the other side, place filters and glasses back on, and continue your photos.
Keep the iso under 160, if possible, the f stop is not as important, as the speed.
Be safe, here are some Lakewood rules for the eclipse.
Some quick reminders: Make sure that you have eclipse viewing glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 standards. Improperly viewing an eclipse can cause permanent damage to your eyes.

Totality begins: 3:13 p.m. EDT
