Lakewood Pro Football Hero Spends Arbor Day In 3rd Grade

One of Ed Denk’s Football card from 1960. As a pro he played for the Boston Patriots, where his hard nose style became the rage.

Lakewoodite Ed Denk heard about an international group trying to plant over a million trees a year. It was an idea he liked. What he liked even more was the various ways they went about getting trees planted. By connecting local projects with tree saplings, and getting them planted all over the world. Wanting to do it here, he worked with Lakewood Schools to identify what age group would most appreciate and learn from it. Third graders it was decided have the perfect mix of curiosity and smarts to get the most from the program, and to get the trees planted.

Ed’s program is now in four schools, and growing.

This year Ed was invited to talk to the 3rd grade classes of Cindy Vullo, Melissa Hare and Megan Baslack and a good time was had by all. Here are some photos from the day, with a link to more.

Philanthropist Ed Denk, a couple years older than the football card but still has that smile.

Many questions for Ed, and each one was answered.

Then the students grabbed flower pots and potting soil courtesy of Lakewood Hardware and planted their saplings in a temporary home.
