The amount of trade between the U.S. and China makes the prospect of of a Cold War with China irrational. The amount of trade between China and our Allies in East Asia makes a Cold War with China irrational. But the leadership class of both U.S. parties are basically big kids. Big rich kids. The Senators, The Cabinets, the Top pundits, the top Lobbyists. They are going to dare and double dog dare and triple dog dare each other into ratcheting this up. That being the case, it was a mistake to have spent the last 8 years interfering in Ukrainian politics and then getting into a de facto war with Russia. Maintaining even a pretext of a Cold War with China would have required normalizing relations with Russia and encouraging neutral trading relationships between Russia and western and Central Europe.
