The Rockport Miracles

I presume someone besides me must be reading Scott MacGregor's extended serial The Rockport Miracles. But, since this would seem like the logical place for reactions and I don't recall any, I'll post a note.

I didn't get into this right away. But one of the installments captured my interest last year, and I have been a regular reader since. Despite which, it's a challenge to articulate what the series even is, let alone what's appealing about it.

Upon reflection, I think The Rockport Miracles might usefully be considered part of America's long tradition of tall tales. Earlier this year I re-read Life on the Mississippi, and TRM may be compared with many of Twain's unapologetically outlandish digressions. The Rockport Miracles airs out this style of deadpan weirdness in contemporary Lakewood, after a soak in LSD and Vietnam flashbacks.

That's a guess at what's going on, at least.

Another thought for the assumed other readers of The Rockport Miracles, it turns out that "the storm era" may be real, although it's starting in Iowa instead of Northeast Ohio. The images and reports of the very real derecho which clobbered parts of Iowa, a few days ago, are… well, even in this year of disasters, it's eye opening. Particularly if this is another glimpse of the future.
