Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Around 2:40pm a call went out for a working fire on Spring Garden between Franklin and Detroit.

Empty 3 story home was burning.

The home has been empty since a company bought it, rebuilt it and put it on the market for $338,000.00

Image
The home had recently been reduced in price.

When the fire department answered the call smoke was already coming out the third floor. One Lakewood Policeman nearby mentioned they had people at the scene within 1 minute of the call.

Image
Lakewood fire fighters break the glass to vent house and get water in the house. But look at the window they are standing in front of.

Image
Seconds later the room erupted in flame, What had been going on is that the fire probably started in the basement, traveled across the ceiling into the siding of the house. The smoke that had been seen was the house, the whole house burning.

Image
Fire fighters down and safe, time to get water on it.

Image
Getting water on the flames.

Image
Smoke turning white means water is getting to the fire and the hot spots.

Image

Image
At one point these fire fighters were all in the burning house.

Image
The back of the house shows the same kind of smoke and damage.

Image
As the fire becomes manageable some of the fire fighters take a break, getting water and new air tanks before going back in.

Image
While it looks bad, it could be much worse. With no one home someone had to notice the smoke and call.

Image
Even with a quick response, as you could see here the house was already burning heavily, and erupted in fire. Still the structure was saved, as were the homes right next to it, and no one was hurt.

I notice the yellow “Cash For Your Home” sign on the lawn.

Prophetic?

Actual cause has yet to be determined. Over hearing fire fighters talking it would seem they believe it started in the basement near the furnace.

As far as the the house, the price, and the fire. Neighbors were ripe with reasons and other comments.

It was a great lesson in "gentrification" in so much, many hated the house and the price as it would ruin their taxes. A common fear, mostly unfounded.

There was talk that there was a pending offer on the house.

Put it all down as rumors on the street at the fire.
