There are Starbucks customers in Lakewood. Enough to make a profit? I don't know, but a) they will have a drive-thru, and b) they apparently own the building which means no rent increases. Starbucks is poised for more lonevity than other coffee shops if objections to the drive-thru don't sink them.

There are Starbucks fans everywhere. I know of 6 that will be daily customers, instead of going to W116 in the morning. But that is issue one, dragging customers from other stores. And their deep pockets allow them to battle the local shops even when no one is going to it. It is odd the city that cares do much about Lakewoodites health, sell off the hospital for a strip mall with a coffee shop, brags about Raisin Cain's, and bends over backwards for Wendy's Taco Bell, McDonald and now Starbucks.
While Lakewood businesses build and grow as other cities see them and want them. City Hall administration and that small group of mindless leaders still want Cheesecake Factory, and outside businesses they covet instead of appreciating the hard work of friends and neighbors.
You don't know what you have until it is gone.

If this Starbucks specifically wanted a location with a drive through for commuters there is one logistical issue. There are frequently multiple Starbucks at or near or on the way to where people are commuting to.

This raises a question of how many people use that congested stretch of Detroit for commuting. I live in the area and use Elmwood to go south and Clifton to go east or west. My bank is in that vicinity and I will usually give a thought to using the drive-thru at another branch. When using GPS, it confirms those directions.ryan costa wrote:If this Starbucks specifically wanted a location with a drive through for commuters there is one logistical issue. There's a reason Burger King gave up the location after it lost a ton of business when the hospital closed (and I know that from an excellent source).

The Burger King deal was done nearly 18 months ago.
Its numbers were never that high. Not even as high as Burger King on Highland and Madison. This is why Starbucks was able to buy it when it wanted a drive thru.

Starbucks is TRANSFORMING all locations to drive thru. All stores will have drive throughs.
You’ll notice they replaced and built new on Clifton and W116. The Lorain Rd in N Olmsted was closed and two new drive-throughs built - at Clague and Dover Center.
The Strongsville store on 82 was relocated to build a drive through.
The Rocky River store was slated to be replaced - plans to build new nearby on Detroit fell through but it will eventually be replaced.
I’m sure Starbucks will do quite well in Lakewood but the traffic flow will suffer. Anyone who has driven down Clifton in the AM can get a preview. In spite of a side street entrance, the line wraps out the side street and around and out Clifton Blvd creating a traffic hazard, IMO.
Time will tell.

You are correct about them proably doing well, with a caveat.Bridget Conant wrote:

If the Lakewood location merely diverts some cars from Clifton, they might survive. But if that traffic pattern is duplicated, look out. Lakewood will raise hell over it.

I drove by there a couple of times this weekend and saw that if such a long line of cars extends off the Starbucks property, it will run down Detroit to the Elmwood/Andrews intersection which jams up easily.Dan Alaimo wrote:You are correct about them proably doing well, with a caveat.Bridget Conant wrote:

I'm wondering what the traffic situation is at the Starbucks mow that it's been open awhile.
We got there for the first time tonight and were quite underwhelmed. It's one of the blandest Starbucks I've seen. It wpuld seem they wanted the location only for the drive-thru.
And that terrible curb cut at the exit was never fixed.
