In another thread, a council candidate notes that he can't respond to something because he has been busy at work. I don't have a problem with that - it's common for anyone in a responsible full-time job to be in a busy patch.
But I raise questions not particular to that candidate, for for anyone who wants to serve on City Council. What should we expect from our council reps in terms of time and effort, especially ward council reps? And to the candidates, how much discretionary time can you devote to the job?
To do it right, council rep is a demanding job. It is defined as part-time with a small honorarium salary, but members are minimally expected to attend an array of city meetings. Also they need to attend various civic meetings as needed to do their jobs. And in addition, they need to continually meet with people in their wards and be immediately responsive to their needs, even if it means 24/7. Sometimes it's a city issue, sometimes it's something that a city council member can help with. Then there is family. In short, how much do you - all, not just the aforementioned candidate - want this job?
I'd like to hear from the candidates, as well as those who already have these positions, and residents. Personally, I expect 24/7 representation. I've never asked for that from a council member, but I'd like to know that they are available. And while I'll understand when they aren't available, I'll want to know why. Is that reasonable?
That may be another reason to go to a system where all seven council members represent a ward.
MORE: I realize that there is much I left out - the paperwork, the research, the many extra meetings when a big issue comes up. Feel free to fill in the gaps.

Same party, same results.
