America's Top Healthiest Cities, Damn Missed Again!

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

As we continue to fall short on new goals, while quickly moving away from old awards like, "Safest City In America," "Top ten places to Live," we failed again in...

Healthiest Communities In America https://www.usnews.com/news/healthiest-communities

Perhaps one more term for the Mayor? Councilman Bullock, pssssssst no time to move on, promises to keep here.

Odd thing, one small thing all doctors agree on that make every living thing healthier - SUNSHINE!

As it is Musical Monday here on the Deck, we bring back a favorite from that crooner Frank Sinatra...

A new ranking of the country's healthiest communities

Falls Church, Va., is the healthiest community in the country, according to a new ranking compiled by U.S. News & World Report and the Aetna Foundation. The groups scored 3,000 communities in 10 categories, including education, infrastructure, and population health, which is itself based on access to care, mental health, and health outcomes. A number of Colorado and Virginia communities populated the top 10, with Colorado’s Douglas County and Broomfield County coming in second and third. Fourth went to Los Alamos County, N.M., while Dukes County, Mass., rounded out the top 5.

Lakewood is going to have to jump through some hoops, if it wants to be ‘the healthiest city in America.’

There was a large number of the people at the city council meeting the night, when Mary Louise Madigan stated that "Lakewood would become the healthiest city in America. She went on to say, that "Lakewood would be the envy of everyone in America, and everyone would want to move here."

Yep. All we’d have to do to achieve that status is eat more healthily and ride bikes. Those two things right there would make a marked change in our health.

Forget the fact, that many people cannot ride bikes due to health and/or physical limitations. Forget the fact that DNA plays an important role as to just how healthy one can be. Through no fault of their own, some folks draw the short straw when it comes to genetics.

I forgot to mention that the new Family Health Care Center would also play a role into turning Lakewood into the healthiest city in America.

Somehow, combining the health centers on the east end of Detroit Ave. and the west end of Madison Ave. into the new center, and throwing in the resident doctors of Fairview General, along with whatever goodies a study suggests is needed, and Lakewood would achieve its goal.

The awe in her voice, when Mary Louise Madigan the then-City Council President mentioned the new Family Health Care Center, was beyond ludicrous.

She made it sound like a special beam would shine down upon us, as we walked through those doors and make everyone healthy.

Honestly. If you were at that meeting, then you know what I mean. It was really special.

That night was burned into my memory.

Appears that the city and school administrations have something in common, their grades are not even close to level of their claimed braying and an embarrassment to the investment taxpayers are making.

Sadly it goes deeper, another thing in common with each other is lack of accountability in meetings, goals and sunshine laws.

Also they both seem to have this fabulous concept of management through benign neglect.

Which actually could be good, when you think about how when they actually do things, it ends up twisted and not that impressive.

Then when looks at all of the overlaps and potential conflicts of interests it becomes staggering. Look where school board members end up, at the Foundations, at City Hall to shovel public assets to them, all with ZERO accountability. I always wondered why the schools sat by so quietly as our largest employer and tax payer was ushered out of town on a rail. Now it is all coming into focus. The rec center started by City Hall ends up being paid for with school bond money.

Then there is the diminutive under achiever that loves to touts himself as a "doer" that ping pongs between City Hall and the Schools with friends and relatives employed at each, as this city falls father and farther down the list of desirable, safe, educated, wealthy, and on and on. Spiraling to the bottom. Doers!

Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton.

It is one thing to look forward, it is one thing to give people hope, it is one thing to try to better ourselves.

All noble gestures.

It is something complete different to outright lie and mislead voters while you liquidate their largest asset to benefit you and friends.

Lakewood residents have been played.
